Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Moldova is the region of Bucovina, home to one of the world's greatest Byzantine art treasures: the 'Painted Monasteries' - UNESCO World heritage sites. Built in the 15th and 16th centuries and featuring colorful exterior frescoes depicting dramatic religious scenes, these richly decorated houses of worships are unique in the world. The best-known of these, often called "the Sistine Chapel of the East" is Voronet Monastery. Erected in 1488, Voronet's most stunning feature is a Last Judgment fresco painted on its façade. The artists here worked in isolation, guarding their trade secrets and to this day, the composition of the paint remains a mystery. Other painted churches not to be missed include Sucevita, with its distinctive greens, and Humor, where the frescoes are predominantly red. Also nearby are, Arbore, Dragomirna, Moldovita and Putna monasteries.

Sebastian was the driver for this day trip. He was very knowledgeable and courteous. I had a very enjoyable experience touring the painted monasteries. He explained many of the fresco paintings, history, and various features of the architecture. He was easy to conserve with, he didn't over talk, yet he was comfortable to be with. I highly recommend Sebastian.

This was one of the best trips we ever had. Thank you Mr Sebastian!

Fantastic day - the painted monasteries were the highlight of my visit to Romania. The day was well organised and the guide gave us excellent information about Romania, the local area and each of the monasteries and their frescos. Highly recommended.

Leo was a great help and told us about the monasteries and also had the nuns give us a tour. He was very helpful and friendly. Lunch was great. A really lovely day.

I was glad to see that the murals in the monastery were well preserved and that I was able to see where the nuns actually lived.
