Gamla Stan: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Stockholm’s Old City

Gamla Stan: A Self-Guided Audio Tour of Stockholm’s Old City

The cobbled streets of Stockholm’s old town, Gamla Stan, are layered with history. They tell the story of how the city became a medieval settlement forced through climate changes, a transit point for merchants heading to the eastern Baltic Sea, following the earlier Viking's routes. On this walking tour, I’ll introduce you to the fascinating old town that has attracted travelers for centuries. As you walk through the narrow streets of Gamla Stan, I’ll point out the four islands that form this area: Stadholmen, Riddarholmen, Strömsborg and Helgeandholmen. You’ll hear about the people that shaped the city like Birger Jarl, regarded as Stockholm’s founding father, and Gustav Vasa, the father of Swedish monarchy. On this circular tour, I’ll tell you about the current monarchy and its origins. You’ll hear about how the city transformed from a liberated nation to a European powerhouse and, finally, a democratic monarchy. Along the way, you’ll see: • Evert Taubes Terrass, a tranquil square named after the Swedish author, artist, composer and singer • Riddarholmen Church, the final resting place for Swedish monarchs • Storkyrkan, the pink St Nikolai Cathedral that’s been used for coronations as well as royal weddings, including Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling’s 2010 ceremony • Stortorget (the Great Square) where you’ll see the Nobel Museum and Library and hear about the gruesome decapitation of 91 nobles and a bishop in 1520 • Järnpojke, the Iron Child statue, with its head rubbed smooth by superstitious people hoping their wishes will come true • Stockholm Royal Palace and its 608 rooms • The intricate St George and the Dragon statue • Mårten Trotzigs Gränd, Stockholm’s narrowest street • Västerlånggatan, Gamla Stan’s longest commercial street. Join me on this 75-minute stroll down cobblestones alleys and streets to learn about Stockholm and Swedish architecture, artwork, and local cuisine. There are plenty of places along the way to treat yourself to some refreshments or to go window-shopping.

Stockholm Old Town Guided Walking Tour (English/German/Spa.)

Stockholm Old Town Guided Walking Tour (English/German/Spa.)

Welcome/Willkommen/Bienvenidos! Our Old Town Walking Tour offers you a quick summary of "Gamla Stan" in just 90 minutes. You will learn more about the Old Town's dark past and colorful present. Meeting point is at the crossing between the alleys Storkyrkobrinken and Västerlånggatan 5 minutes prior to start. Your Stockholm Summer Tours guide will be wearing a visible vest. Our journey starts at Riddarholmen island and Riddarholmen Church, the oldest surviving building in Stockholm today. After introducing the historic center of Stockholm we continue along the main shopping street Västerlånggatan, as we enjoy the historical architecture and buildings around us. We cover the old city walls and pass by the Viking restaurant Aifur, as well the narrowest street in Stockholm (Mårten Trotzig alley). Turning around towards the northern part of the Old Town, we continue along Prästgatan ("Priest street") and later arrive at the main Square ("Stortorget") with the colorful buildings. The tour of course includes a visit to the Iron Boy - the smallest statue in Stockholm. Although Stockholm is considered the cashless society, remember to bring some coins to give the Iron Boy as it is considered luck! Around the corner we arrive at our final stop - the Royal Palace, right next to the Stockholm Cathedral and the Governor's Palace. Here we enjoy a "Fika" as your guide tells you the last stories, facts and recommendations. After the tour your guide will stay around for a chat and happily help you with any recommendations, depending on what you might be looking for. If you have any allergies, please let us know in advance so your guide can adapt the Fika. Don't find your tour on the day you wish? Contact Stockholm Summer Tours and we will try our best to work it out! We look forward to seing you this summer.

Sophie was a dream!! We have NEVER had such a dedicated, warm and attentive tour guide! She was fully responsive to our wishes and needs and not only answered all of our questions competently, but also gave us really valuable information. For us, meeting her was a very special highlight of our trip to Stockholm. SKOL and thank you for the trip to the Viking Age in this quaint restaurant! We wish her all the best for the future and will definitely recommend her!! Martina

Riding the Segway was a lot of fun and while the control was a bit difficult at first, we got used to it fast. It was very nice to get a quick overview over the city and some of the cities stories!

Our tour guide, Lydie was fantastic and knowledgeable! We got the 3-hour tour which was just right, but I so wish there were breaks for water or coffee in between. Other than that, fantastic tour.

We did a Segway tour with Stefhen. The guide was very professional and kind. We enjoyed the tour very much. I highly recommend the tour and the guide in particular

Sofia was great. She provided us with some interesting information on the old town and stories about Sweden. I would highly recommend taking the tour.
