I was fortunate to be in a small group when I went on this tour. The original guide had to go join another group who's guide called in sick, so our driver Brandon did both driving and guide duty. He was really knowledgable, funny, and friendly. West Kennet Long Barrow and Avebury are in some ways even more interesting than Stonehenge. And a big bonus was the drive through the beautiful countryside, small villages with thatched roofs, and charming towns. All the while Brandon filled in snippets of fun details, history, etc. about what we were seeing, the history of England in general, as well as the sites we visited. Do it!
I recommend everyone to purchase tickets ahead on line. Nobody had told me , so I stayed in a long line untilI I realized prepaid line was no waiting. I booked myself a ticket while standing and quickly moved to the other window (no line). That was a good move. The site is kind of far. Everyone has to take a shuttle bus. The site was roped around, which in a way, was very good as we could see the stones without people around. This site is a known power site. I had a feeling coming through .
I have always wanted to see Stonehenge and was excited to finally book up the tickets. The overall experience was great however there was one big disappointment, the fact that we were not allowed to enter inside the stone rings left me a bit underwhelmed. I realise that the amount of visitors is a problem but how about laying a walkway through the centre just to experience being inside the monument. The new visitor centre and village were a great addition
From the information centre to the stones you can either catch a shuttle bus or walk along the side of the road or through fields and woods by barrows. Just make sure you have your ticket with you if you separate from your group to walk or catch the bus ect (they stapel your tickets together in one bundle), as they won’t let you in when you turn up to the stones.
Another website indicated it would take three days to book and receive confirmation of ticketing. You site offered more time slots and immediate confirmation so we could visit same day. Even in wind and rain, site was outstanding. Next time get the audio guided tour, but even without, historical signage was very helpful for first time visitors.
