Top 5 places to see on a Stockholm walking tour

Stockholm's archipelago divides the city into a smorgasbord of attractions for different tastes. Here are five of the best, rich with history and character, to build any walking tour around.

Drottningholm Palace

Drottningholm Palace

Swing by the private palace of the Swedish Royal Family and roam its fabulous gardens. Don't forget to check the Palace Theatre's program of Summer concerts!

Stockholm City Hall

Stockholm City Hall

One of Stockholm's most historically significant buildings is pretty from the outside, but its interior is truly spectacular. It's also home to Scandinavia's largest pipe organ!

Royal Palace and Parliament House

These magnificent monuments stand opposite each other in Stockholm's Old Town. You'll want to tour the area's cobbled streets to catch other historic sights, like the Riddarhuset.

Stockholm Concert Hall

This neo-classical building is home to the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the annual Nobel Prize ceremony. Great to see lit up at night!

King's Garden

King's Garden

One of the city's most popular parks and always full of life – even in winter, when the ice rink opens up! If visiting in spring, be sure to see its gorgeous cherry blossoms.

Planning Your Visit

How do the free tours work?

Free walking tours are a great way to see Stockholm on a stringent budget, and you'll likely be surprised by how good they are! That said, don't forget that this is how your guide makes a living, so don't forget to bring some cash for a tip at the end.

How hard is it?

The archipelago makes Stockholm very flat and easy to traverse – not to mention scenic! Walking tours don't have to be grueling, with most taking about an hour and a half. Seeing beyond the key landmarks can add quite a bit of time, however, with longer tours averaging at about three hours.

What people are saying about Stockholm

Good variety of Swedish food and a knowledgeable tour guide

We were lucky to go during a quiet period and as a result we had a private tour, just the two of us and the guide who was very friendly and knowledgeable about the food as well as the city. The tour was at a steady pace with time to look around where we wanted to. The stops are well chosen, especially the fish restaurant in the market and the chocolate shop (Chokladfabriken). We wondered if the licorice stop would have an alternative or a pallet cleanser as it has such a strong flavour for people who want to try it but don't want to keep the after taste. All in all we had a great time and would recommend it as a way to explore the city and learn about some of Stockholm's history and culture.

Fantastic guide, great intro to Stockholm, fantastic, plentiful tastes

Theresa was a great guide. Knowledgeable about food, local history, the areas we passed through, and fun. We acted on one of her restaurant recommendations a couple of days later and enjoyed an amazing dinner at Lisa Elmqvist. We also had an interesting, small group for this tour which really enhanced the whole experience. The tour information promised enough food through the tastings for a full meal and we were not disappointed. We were also served a local beer ("breakfast beer" given the time of day!) and had a pleasant Sauvignon Blanc at a stop at a quite elegant resto. I'd recommend this tour to anyone interested in experiencing the flavours of Sweden.

Dara was awesome - we got a GREAT tour of Stockholm and food tastings

Dara seriously did a phenomenal job, considering it was New Years Eve, places were crowded and closing early. Her enthusiasm for her home city and explanations of Stockholm ‘s food origins and traditions were great. My friend and I really enjoyed this tour!!! Highly recommend this tour - well worth the time and money. If you’re thinking of a walking tour - do this instead - get the history and feel of Stockholm and get To taste delicious food.
