- Duration: 8 hours
Depart from Athens early in the morning via the National Highway on this full-day sightseeing tour to the sacred ruins of Delphi. You will pass through the towns of Thebes, Levadia and Arachova as you drive to the site of the Delphic oracle and explore the famous site, known in ancient times as the “Navel of the World.” The 8-hour sightseeing tour will take you past Castalia Spring, continuing on to visit the archaeological site of the Temple of Apollo and the Museum of Delphi. Overall, I'm very happy we took this trip. However, because of traffic, it took 2-3 hours longer than we anticipated. The food was so-so, and while it claimed we could have .5 L of wine included, we had to pay for it when we arrived. Glad we went but just manage your expectations.
Your driver will pick you up from your hotel or cruise ship from where your experience begins. From there you journey out of Athens, passing the plain of Boeotia - an agricultural center, and the city of Thebes - the birthplace of King Oedipus. You'll soon reach the Archaeological Museum of Thebes, one of the most important museums of Greece. The exhibits there originate from excavations all around Boeotia, and cover a long chronological period spanning from the Palaeolithic to the Post-Byzantine periods. Your visit to the museum also includes a walk around the fascinating Mycenae Palace and the Mycenaean Tombs. Continuing onward, you'll travel to Delphi. Once there, explore the Castalia Spring, the archaeological site of Delphi, the monument of the Argive Kings, the treasury of the Athenians, the Athenian Stoa, the Polygonal Wall, the Monument of Platea, and the Temple of Apollo. We were with a small group of people, which made it even more intense. The driver - Elvis - and our guide - Oxana - were exactly on time and were very kind. Oxana knows a lot about Greece and the Greek history and mythology, it's amazing! She tried to include everyone in the talks (not everyone's English was sufficient) and didn't save herself any trouble to help us whenever she could. Delphi itself was amazing, a must-visit. We were lucky that the 1st Sunday of the month, entrance was free. After Delphi we passed Arachova, a lovely village with a great atmoshpere. The lunch after these visits - vegan options are possible, but gluten free (not in this case) would be a challenge we were told - was really good as well, but they served so much food we could hardly finish it all! Overall a great day and an amazing experience :-)
It was almost an individual tour (we were only three tourists). Our driver together with our guide made us not only learn many facts but feel the spirit of the place. We wish we could stay there longer. As for the dinner it was very Greek and very tasty.
The admission prices for the state cultural sites are actually reduced by 50% for EU citizens aged 65 and over, e.g. only 6 euros instead of 12 euros.
Book again at getyourguide, great tour guide, thanks Dora. No sales event. On time.
