Full description
Meet your English-speaking tour guide in front of Saint Stephen's Basilica and start your guided tour inside the church. Built in the 2nd half of the 19th century, it is one of Budapest’s highlights, known for its monumental dome and beautiful Neo-Renaissance architecture. See the mysterious relic the Holy Right, the naturally mummified right hand of the first Hungarian king Saint Stephen who ruled the country in the 11th century and converted Hungarians to Christianity. Learn about the 1000 years old Christian history of a proud nation. Enjoy a guided tour inside the church to see its rich interior covered with real gold and decorated with many frescos and sculptures made by the best local artists of the late 19th century. Then, take an elevator and continue your guided tour to the panoramic terrace around the dome, an amazing lookout point above the whole of Budapest. After the guided tour you can use your ticket to enter the treasury and history exhibition of the basilica which you can explore at your own pace. If the church cannot be visited because of an unforeseen special ceremony, you will be compensated with a guided tour in the treasury and history exhibition where you will learn about the history of the building and about Cardinal Mindszenty the brave leader of the Catholic church who was tortured and imprisoned during the Communist regime.

Our guide Dalia met us promptly and made herself easily visible within the busy entrance area. She spoke excellent English and had visual aids to help us understand the history of St Stephen’s and Budapest. The building itself was stunning and Dalia was able to give detail to what we were looking at. Had we visited without a guide we likely would have missed out on the significance of what we were seeing. We took the two separate lifts provided to help us reach the top of the tower. There were a small number steps still to be negotiated. The views from the tower were spectacular through 360 degrees, provided by an external walkway (just wide enough for two persons to pass) with occasional platforms that allow for opportunities to pose for photos. An excellent tour and whilst it unfolded Dalia demonstrated an excellent knowledge of Budapest and its history.

We really enjoyed our tour of the Basillicq and our guide (we’ve forgotten her name) was incredible. She was so insightful of everything both Basillica related and Budapest. Offering helpful tips of where she thought we should go and try out. I never knew a tour of something like that would be the favourite part of our trip but it definitely was

We had a fabulous visit with our wonderful guide Katalin. The Basilica is beautiful and Katalin was very knowledgeable about the Basilica and the surrounding area. We were expecting to be part of a group, but it was just us and Katalin making it extra special. Definitely worth a visit to this wonderful place.
