At the Speicherstadt, Hamburg's historic red brick warehouses hover above the water on stilts. It's one of the city's best places just to wander around and explore, but if you're looking for a little more than that, try checking out some of these highlights!
Spices are one of Hamburg's major imports and the short, sweet, and slightly odd Spicy's Gewürzmuseum provides about as multisensory a learning experience as it's possible to have!
Coffee is another key import into the harbor. In one of the port's gorgeous red brick buildings, the Kafferösterei serves the best coffee in town – and cakes to match!
The Speicherstadt is home to two museum ships! The Rickmer Rickmers and Cap San Diego are both prime examples of shipping vessels from their eras (1890's and 1960's respectively).
The model railway may well be an attraction in its own right, but Miniatur Wunderland boasts all of Hamburg's sights under one roof, as well as a few from around the world!
Or the German Customs Museum to you and me. If that doesn't sound interesting, consider all the dangerous smuggling, corruption, and diplomacy illustrated in its numerous exhibits!
All the aforementioned museums are open from 10:00AM to 5:00PM, except the Cap San Diego, which is open until 6:00PM. Ticket prices are reasonable, but book a tour on top to enhance the experience! Oh, and be sure to check the weather forecast in advance, because Hamburg can get pretty wet even when it's hot!
There are no U-Bahn stations in Speicherstadt itself, but it's only a minute or so by foot from the stops Baumwall (U3) and Meßberg (U1).
Firstly, There was no map, which shows, how would the trip look like. I expected that the boat goes through the city also, through canals like in Venezia. Secondly, there was a problem with the orientation in the harbour, because, the boat wasn't marked, that this is the boat for this type of trip. When we have asked the staff for information, they, told us there are two different boats and their boat is full for now and we can choose the bigger one. That information was misleading, however, in the advertisement wasn't that type of information. So we ran to another one, which was somewhere else, and we again were looking for it. Next, I would like to mention, that the sentence: "please, be there a little bit earlier, so you can catch the seating next to the window, so you can have a nice view during a trip because the cruise used to be full/sold out" in the advertisement would be useful.
The staff was friendly and helpful, and the tour was as described in the ads. There were toilets on the boat, which was quite convenient. The English-speaking tour guide was a German man with a German accent, not a native speaker of English. His English was reasonably good. The loudspeaker was a loudspeaker, meaning it had a bit of static or distortion, although it wasn't bad as loudspeakers go. The combination made the narration a bit difficult for some people in our group to understand. I didn't have trouble with it, but I have a lot of experience with German accents. Still, having a tour in English was very nice.
Fabulous tour of the canals and port. A rare opportunity to see the port working. The highlight of our quick trip through Hamburg. The live guide is in german so we did not understand but unlike most tours you could hear him clearly from outside. We were given a guide pamphlet in english. Highly recommended.
The boat was clean and comfortable. The guide was knowledgeable and fun. The food and drink were good. Unfortunately the sound system is pretty bad and unless the guide was right next to me, I couldn’t understand much of anything he was saying. When we could hear him, though, it was wonderful!
We were a group of ten people, I prepared the activity together with some colleagues in advance and we didn't go to all the stations but it was quite nice. No pressure and we stopped when we had had enough fun. Important, some info should be updated and they should have a shorter version.
