Vienna's Spanish Riding school: Top 5 facts

Vienna's Spanish Riding School allows you to relive the prestige and sophistication of centuries past. Here are five fascinating facts about its history, which render the Spanish Riding School the only remaining dressage institution of its kind in the world.

The Lipizzaner

The majestic white stallions of the Spanish Riding School are all Lipizzaner, Europe's oldest domesticated breed of horse.

The hall where the performances are held, widely regarded as the world's most beautiful riding hall, was built by eminent baroque architect Joseph Emanuel Fischer in the 1730s.

Spanish Riding School: Our Tips

Choosing the right ticket

Note that there are different options for visiting the Spanish Riding School, including taking a tour of the stables, watching the morning exercises and, of course, witnessing one of the performances. The availability of each option is also dependent on schedule, so make sure to carefully consider the choices to avoid disappointment.

Summer holidays

The horses and riders have their summer break in July and August. It's best to get informed about the exact dates of the break prior to your visit, as it's not possible to watch a performance during the school's summer holidays.

A sweet finishing treat

Cap your day of Viennese tradition by grabbing a slice of delicious Sachertorte at the café on your way out.

What People Are Saying About Spanish Riding School

A peek behind the scenes on the creation of ballet with horses

We saw a variety of practices ranging from young to experienced horses and riders. Audience members with riding experience will have the greatest appreciation for what is being shared. Do not plan to take pictures.
Vienna: Spanish Riding School 2-Hour Morning Exercise Reviewed by Christopher, 10/18/2016

The Treasury is a must see journey of Vienese History.

Attended on own. need to line up Early at Riding School @ 9 am to get a Seat, Expect to wait 1-2hrs. Need 2hrs or more to see the Treasury with Handset, really Amazing and very helpful staff

Treasury more interesting than imagined. SRS very good.

All in all a great experience. However, we were surprised when told that we HAD TO visit the Treasury BEFORE the Spanish Riding School. If known we would have arrived there earlier so as to give plenty of time to the Spanish Riding School. At the school the only thing that spoilt it were very young children making noise with the chairs. Couldn't there be an age limit?

Good investment esp with travel component

Excellent . With the travel component was able to use public transport often and with ease. Also able to access the museums easily . Only point is that in a number of them you still need to line up and get a ticket and others they just scan the pass and you ate in
