South Coast: ATV Quad Bike 2-Hour Safari

1. South Coast: ATV Quad Bike 2-Hour Safari

The adventure starts with a short safety briefing on how to operate the ATVs. When everyone is ready, it's take-off time, when you'll head for the majestic black sand plains of Sólheimasandur. Cross this desert-like landscape and stop by the famous DC3 plane that crashed on the sands in 1973. The guide will lead the group further over the sands to the spectacular coastline to witness views of the surrounding area. From the beach, see Dyrhólaey peninsula, the southernmost tip of Iceland. Looking inland, you can see the marvelous Mýrdalsjökull glacier in the distance. Heading back over the sands and following the Jökulsá river, your adventure will conclude as you cross a river to enter a stunning mountain valley.

From Reykjavik: Golden Circle Buggy Tour

2. From Reykjavik: Golden Circle Buggy Tour

The Golden Circle is a must-see for any who come to Iceland. It features some of the most iconic sites that have been made famous through postcards and other imagery of the country. It's most famed sites include the geysir spring area where water erupts from the earth, the historic Þingvellir National Park, and the immensely powerful Gullfoss Waterfall. Your full-day tour will begin with your guide picking you up from your accommodation in Reykjavik. You will be taken to the base camp located only 15 minutes away from the city center. At the basecamp, a safety briefing and short instructional course will show you how to operate the buggies safely. Then you're off! The versatile buggy allows you to tear through the off-road trails that lead to the mountaintop of Hafrefell and give way to an impressive panoramic view overlooking Reykjavik. After the tour finishes, return to your accommodation. Please note that the buggies are 2-seater, so you can either choose to share or choose to drive your own buggy by selecting the 'single rider' option.

Reykjavik: Golden Circle & Northern Lights 4x4 Tour

3. Reykjavik: Golden Circle & Northern Lights 4x4 Tour

See Iceland’s Golden Circle on an afternoon and search for the Northern Lights on the same evening tour from Reykjavik. See the ancient geological formations and parliament site at Thingvellir National Park; watch the Strokkur waterspout at Geysir; and admire the beautiful Gullfoss Waterfall. As darkness falls, seek out the Northern Lights, escaping light pollution to experience the incredible light show. Numbers are limited to six people for a more personalized experience. Travel inland in a comfortable 4x4 designed to negotiate rugged terrain, and hear from your guide about Iceland’s volcanic geology. Your first stop is Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learn how the landscapes have been formed over millennia, and absorb the contrast between the lush green vegetation and rich, black ground. Travel on to Geysir, a geothermal field of hot springs, steam vents and the remnants of an old volcano. Continue to Gullfoss Waterfall, whose name means ‘Golden Falls,’ a reference to the shimmering, multi-colored mists that can sometimes appear above the waters. As dusk falls, begin your quest for the Northern Lights. Iceland is one of the world’s best places to see them, and your all-terrain 4x4 and knowledgeable guide will allow you to identify and access the best potential viewing sites. The pulsating colors of the lights, usually green and blue, split the darkness and sometimes shine brighter than the moon.

From Reykjavik: South Coast and Black Beach ATV Ride

4. From Reykjavik: South Coast and Black Beach ATV Ride

Ride a powerful ATV over a large, black, volcanic beach, walk behind the thundering veil of water at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, and take in the incredible view over Iceland's South Coast from the top of the cascade Skógafoss on this fantastic day tour.  After being picked up early in the morning or meeting up with your guide at Reykjavík Terminal, head to Iceland's South Coast, famous for its dramatic coastline and cascading waterfalls. Your first stop is the black desert of Sólheimasandur, in the shadow of Eyjafjallajökull glacier, where you'll swap the bus for a powerful ATV quad-bike.  After traversing the stark, black beaches of Island's South Coast on your ATV bike, make your way to the DC3 plane wreck from 1973, recently seen in Justin Bieber’s music video and photo shoots. Looking northwards and inland, the Mýrdalsjökull glacier rises majestically, while to the south you can sense the raw power of the enormous Atlantic waves crashing on to the shore. Once back on the bus, continue your journey and visit an iconic waterfall duo: Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss. The former falls from the heights of 60-metres, and a staircase next to it will lead you to unbelievable views of the South Coast and Iceland's interior. Seljalandsfoss, however, is a narrower cascade which falls over a concave cliff, making it possible to fully encircle the stream of water.

What people are saying about Southern Region, Iceland

This is an amazing tour and for sure the best way to reach the plane crash site. Instead of one hour walking to the site, you spend the time in a thrill adventure that also includes black beach, driving through tunnels, rocks and lavender gardens with a great finish to a visit to a valley with a river of water coming directly from the glacier. The time spent in the plane site crash was more than enough to take all the pictures you need. Our tour guide was amazing and helpful. I definitely recommend this activity.

Our guide was excellent. It’s too bad the other participants did not read the description of the tour. It read ‘ not for beginners, intermediate’. Two people were clearly beginners and slowed the whole group down. The guide had to continually stop to wait for those who were not comfortable driving an ATV which really ruined the entire trip for the others.. despite this the black sand beach was super fun to drive in and made it a unique way of getting to the plane wreck. I loved going through the streams.

This was a great adventure, the guides were so cool, lots fun, a definite must do… the black sand beaches are so vast, it feels unreal. (FYI - When you book your tour, you are apparently paying a price for 2 individuals to share 1 bike… but it’s not indicated when booking… we had to pay extra for a separate bike)

It was well worth it even just for the ATV part alone. Felt like being on another planet. Our guide was very knowledgeable and funny and made the drive go by fast. Fair warning though, you will probably get wet if you want to get close to the waterfalls. Amazing trip, I would highly recommend

Excellent tour with ATVs. Tour guide was amazing...full of interesting stories plus extra stops. A must do!
