Travel on the local train to Herculaneum, an ancient lavished town, and then join your professional guide for a 2-hour tour to discover this once thriving Roman resort town.

Today, many ancient streets and buildings are visible, although over 75% of the Roman town remains covered under the modern towns of Ercolano and Portico. From the tour, you can speculate what the rest of the town of Herculaneum might look like under the rest of the molten rock.

Some say Herculanium is "better" than Pompei. I do not agree. Herculanium is far more compact & I was surprised to find that unlike Pompei, it is actually in an area some 60 - 70 feet below the surface of the surrounding terrain as it was deeply buried in the eruption. For that reason most of Herculanium remains buried & will remain that way as the still covered area has been built on. Pompei was not as deeply buried, was much easier to excavate, is far more extensive, level & easier to get around. Herculanium has gradients, quite a lot of steps and tripping hazards. We went on a hot day & getting around was clearly something of a minor ordeal for some people, particularly the elderly & others not not so fit. That all apart, it was all very interesting & we had a very good guide (Josefina). The train from Sorento stopped about everywhere & the seats were plastic & uncomfortable. The overall experience was extremely well organised.

Fantastic experience. We spoke to the tour company before the day and they made sure we were prepared with water, hats, comfortable shoes etc. We were met at the station by our guide Josephine and she made everything straightforward for us on the way there and made sure we knew exactly how to make our own way back after the guided tour if we chose to stay, which we did. Josephine was very knowledgable and made sure we got the best experience from our visit, it really wouldn’t have been the same without a guide. Wet would definitely recommend this guided tour. We have already recommended the same trip to others staying at the same hotel

The guide Sasa was excellent very informative & helpful & asked everyone if they were enjoying the tour on several occasions so very caring , the only tricky bit was getting off at the right station as the train was very packed so the group had to split up but other than this it was outstanding .
