Following an early morning pick-up from your hotel, drive to the Boyana district on the outskirts of Sofia and explore the medieval Church of Boyana. Built in the 10th and 11th century, the 2-story church was expanded in the 13th-century Second Bulgarian Empire, and again in the 19th century. It owes its fame to the 13th-century frescoes depicting scenes from Bulgarian and biblical history.

It takes its name from the hermit, St. Ivan Rilski, and is located in the middle of the fragrant forests of the Rila Mountains.
