Full description
Spend the day exploring 2 UNESCO World Heritage Sites located outside of Sofia, Bulgaria's capital city. Begin by meeting at 9:00 behind St. Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia. Sit back and relax for the next 2 hours as your friendly, English-speaking drivers transport you to Rila. Upon arriving, spend 2 hours exploring the area and visiting the Rila Monastery, the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Then enjoy lunch at a local restaurant which features a specialty of grilled trout. Get back in the van for another 2-hour journey, eventually arriving at Boyana Church, a medieval Bulgarian Orthodox church on the outskirts of Sofia. Check out the elaborate frescoes that have made this site famous, before your tour returns you to your meeting point.

The audioguide is a recording in Spanish that apparently has nothing to do with what the tour guide explains to you. That the driver takes you directly to a place to eat when there are options does not seem entirely correct. On the other hand, in the Boyana church they charge you to enter and if you want a minimum explanation they also charge you, and there is no translation into Spanish there either, as we had paid. A recording that does not match what they explain in English either. You are 10 mn, and you pay 2 times.

We had a fantastic day at Boyana and Rila Monastery. Alex, our guide, was really informative and friendly and entertained us with stories about the history of the country and the places we visited. We had a delicious lunch at a small, family-owned restaurant and a brief visit to a winery to finish the day off. Excellent!

Great sites with a great guide

We were taken for this tour by Ivan who shared his passion for Bulgarian history and culture with us all day. When we hadn't chosen the audioguide or any extra option he gave us a full guided tour of both sites, including inside Rila's museum which was a bless as there's isn't much information provided on the sites. We also loved to have been given the choice of eating in a restautant we had stopped on our way or stay extra time in the monastry and still being picked up after. We chose the restaurant and its warm fireplace because it was very cold but you also have restaurants just behind the monastry with terraces facing the sun at this time if you prefer. Rila's monastry is a pure treasure with all its detailed paintings and Boyana is definitely a must see too, specially as you would never guess its beauty from outside. Thank you again Ivan for this great day !
