The eastern church was built in the 10th century, then enlarged at the beginning of the 13th century by Sebastocrator Kaloyan, who ordered a second two storey building to be erected next to it. The frescoes in this second church, painted in 1259, make it one of the most important collections of medieval paintings. The ensemble is completed by a third church, built at the beginning of the 19th century. This site is one of the most complete and perfectly preserved monuments of east European medieval art.

If you are visiting Sofia it is worth booking this excursion to the Rila monastery and the Boyana church, really suggestive places. The guide Martin was interesting and informative with sympathy, keeping the good mood of the whole group; I learned a lot both about the places visited and about Bulgarian history and culture. Easy to follow in English too. I really recommend this experience, excellent organization!

Very nice trip covering Boyana church and Rila monastery. Everything was in time and according to description. Bus was comfortable. Guide Martin was excellent, full of knowledge but also entertaining. We had enough free time to explore on our own as well. This tour was highlight of my trip to Bulgaria and I would recommend it to other travelers.
