South Coast Classic: Full-Day Tour from Reykjavik

South Coast Classic: Full-Day Tour from Reykjavik

On this full-day tour, you’ll follow the coastline from Reykjavík into the volcanic and glaciated wonderland that is Iceland's south coast. Walk behind the thundering veil of spray at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall and take in the incredible views from the top of the Skógafoss waterfall. Your tour begins with a drive through lava fields, passing by the active Hengill volcano, and then down to rich coastal farmlands. On clear days you’ll be able to see the Hekla volcano, and in the distance the glacier-capped Eyjafjallajökull volcano rises majestically above the coastal mountains. Just a few kilometers off the coastline and easily visible are the volcanic Westman Islands, an archipelago of around 15 small islands, only one of which is inhabited. Stop at the Sólheimajökull glacier, which is every photographer’s dream. Next on the itinerary is the Reynisfjara black sand beach. See the powerful Atlantic waves crashing on the black sands, the jagged basalt sea stacks and the huge basalt-column cave. Next you’ll head to the coastal village of Vik, the southernmost village in Iceland, located on the island’s main ring road. Despite its small size (291 inhabitants), it is the largest settlement for 70 kilometers. On your way back to Reykjavík, you’ll stop by the powerful Skógafoss waterfall for a short walk up a flight of steps to admire one of Iceland´s most scenic views. The view takes in glaciers, volcanoes and black sandy beaches. The last stop is at the 60-meter-high Seljalandsfoss waterfall, best known for the hidden pathway behind and around it.

From Reykjavik: South Coast and Glacier Hiking Tour

A glacier walk is a great way to experience Icelandic nature and a tour to Sólheimajökull glacier tongue is an ideal way to spend the day. On the 2-hour drive from Reykjavík, you will pass right under the famous Eyjafjallajökull volcano that caused so much trouble in the spring of 2010. Just east of the volcano lies Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull, Iceland’s fourth-largest glacier. As you explore the wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges, and deep crevasses, you will learn more and more about these disappearing giants. Experienced mountain guides will teach you how to use basic glacier equipment for this tour. Please note that ice climbing is not included. On the way back to Reykjavík after the exhilarating glacier hike, you will stop at the two beautiful waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljandsá river, which has its origins in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes this waterfall so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. It is recommended that you bring either a raincoat or a waterproof coat along if you want to walk behind it. Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk. The waterfall was also used in the films Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

After crossing the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, we shall drive through the lowlands and stop at a gas station in Hvolsvollur. We then continue to the stunningly beautiful Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls, at 63 m/210 ft. Here, we can follow the trail behind the waterfall. We then drive east along farms at the foot of the cliffs of Mount Eyjafjol. Our next stop is the mighty 60 m/200 ft Skogafoss waterfall, fed by water flowing from the Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers. The Atlantic Ocean and its foamy waves wash the black sand at the foot of Dyrholaey. From here, we can enjoy the varied landscapes of the Myrdalur valley, its green fields, and pastures. We continue our trip and stop for a walk along the coastline of Reynisfjara Beach, considered the most impressive black sand beach in Iceland, with unique vertical basalt columns reminiscent of a pyramid with stone steps. In the water opposite the beach, you will see Reynisdrangar, stunningly shaped basalt rocks. However, watch for solid waves and don’t get too close to the water. From the black sand beach, we drive towards Reykjavik and stop at the Sólheimajökull glacier, the tongue of Myrdalsjökull, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland. Here, we can follow the trail to enjoy the view of the glacier from a short distance. After visiting the Solheimajokull glacier, we will return to Reykjavik. Golden Circle and South Coast. Day Tour

Golden Circle and South Coast. Day Tour

The tour starts from Reykjavik, and heads to Thingvellir National Park. We shall walk along the Almannagja fissure in the Thingvellir, where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge. Thingvellir served as a parliament place for centuries, from the early Viking settler’s time to the late 18th century. We will then continue to the Gullfoss waterfall, one of Iceland’s most stunning landmarks. The falls are 32m/100ft high and are divided into two steps, the falling water flowing through a long, rugged canyon. The HvitaRiverr forms the waterfall, flowing from the Langjokull glacier. In summer, when the amount of meltwater from Langjokull is exceptionally high, it increases to an average of 140 cubic meters per second. The next stop will be in the Haukadalur, the Valley of Geysers, one of the main attractions of the route. Here, the Strokkur geyser spews a mixture of hot water and steam up to 20-30m/65-100ft every 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, the other hot springs in the area, led by the great Geysir, are quiet but colorful. After visiting the three foremost attractions of the Golden Circle route, we head to the South Coast towards Seljalandsfoss, one of Iceland’s most famous waterfalls. Its height is 63 m/210ft, and it is stunningly beautiful. It offers walks along the trail behind the waterfall, which is especially beautiful on a sunny day when you can see the rainbow. We shall then drive east along the farms at the foot of the former coastline in the Eyjafjoll area and arrive at the mighty Skogafoss, a 60m/200ft waterfall fed by Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers. This majestic waterfall is one of the most visited places in Iceland, and for a good reason. After visiting the waterfall, we recommend stopping for lunch in Skogar. Next, we continued our journey and stopped for a walk along the coast of Reynisfjara beach, near the village of Vik. It is considered the most impressive black sand beach in Iceland, with unique vertically shifted basalt columns reminiscent of a stone-stepped pyramid. In the water opposite the beach, you will also see the stunningly shaped basalt rocks of Reynisdrangar. Afterward, we will turn around and take the road back to Reykjavik. Please note: the itinerary is subject to change depending on weather and road conditions.

It couldn't be better. Great tour! Addendum: it had rained, some of the cars were soaked and the bus had poor heating. The guide also had poor visibility because the heating was apparently not able to dehumidify/ventilate the window, which can lead to an accident.

The guide told various very interesting stories about Iceland. The whole trip went smoothly, without any problems. We admired beautiful views. I am traveling with 3 children, who were not bored at all. The trip met my expectations.

amazing day trip, i recommend to anyone visiting Reykjavík! Our guide was amazing, had so many great stories and kept us entertained throughout the drive
