Take a journey through the stories and places that, since the immemorial time, fill the region of Sintra of mystery and make it one of the most pleasant destinations in the world.
What to Expect
The Sintra Myths and Legends Interpretative Center invites you on a journey into the mysticism, secrets and romanticism of the town, by means of its history, music and literature. Through set pieces, multimedia techniques and sensory experiences, reality and fiction intersect at each of the 17 points along the route. The project team included architects, set designers, scriptwriters, historians and specialists in audiovisual productions, holograms, sensory effects, augmented reality and 3D films.
This expedition through the myths and legends of Sintra begins in an elevator lined with pictures of the town. You will find yourself immediately enveloped by the sounds of the forest and the low lighting. The tour proper begins on the 3rd floor, where you will feel like you have climbed to the very top of Sintra Mountain.
Here, a narrator introduces the legends and talks about the time when the Penhas (rocky cliffs) were created - as told in the Legend of the Five Sintra Heights with the Same First Names and Different Surnames. On the second floor, you can start to interact with historical events and other legends, through touchscreens and an animated film projected on canvases, which makes use of video mapping. This is all supported by audio guide narration.
On the first floor, you will find the legend of the Tomb of the Two Brothers and that of the Exclamations of Woe (”Ai!” in Portuguese). These legends are told through full-size holograms that don’t just bring the stories to life but also create kinetic experiences in which you become a player in the game, running through the woods, avoiding obstacles and catching some of the things in the legends. On the seventh “Ai”, you lose.
In the area given over to the writers who have been seduced by the magic of Sintra, there are animated portraits of these authors, each of whom recounts their experiences in the first person. Here, in a 4D space, the legend in which Our Lady appeared to a dumb girl shepherding her flock of sheep on the mountain is told through a multi-sensory experience supplemented by special wind and scent effects.
In the basement (-1 level), new adventures await. These include the tunnel that simulates the Initiation Well; the immersive experience of being on board a ship and sighting the Adamastor, whilst surrounded by the heaving seas; or even the set pieces and holograms that recreate the pagan world, of nature, animals and fairies, that permeates the legends and myths. The visit ends in the magic of the greenery and the sounds of the forest.
