Explore the mysterious 12th-century temples of King Suryavarman II on a 2-day tour of Angkor Wat and Ta Promh, and see the main sights of the former capital of the Khmer Empire. Cruise on the Tonle Sap Lake to meet local fishermen, and more.
What to Expect
Enjoy the majestic Khmer Empire temples of Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, and go to the early Khmer temple of Beng Mealea to see a prototype for the later Angkor capital. You will also visit some of the floating villages of Tonle Sap Lake, where you can meet fishermen and learn more about everyday life in rural Cambodia.
On your first day, you will take a tour of Angkor Thom, starting at the South Gate entrance. Visit the main temple of Bayon (4-Faced Temple) to see the last great temple to be built at the Angkor complex. Experience up-close where the Khmer rulers watched their returning armies from the Terrace of the Elephants, and see the stunning 3-tiered temple of Baphoun, where a 51-year restoration project has finally been completed. Experience the steamy environment of the jungle at Ta Promh, where the blockbuster movie “Tomb Raider” was shot.
After lunch, continue your temple tour at Angkor Wat, the most legendary of the temples of the Khmer kingdom, and its former capital. Admire exquisite carvings and bas reliefs dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu, and see scenes depicting Hindu mythology. Back in Siem Reap, enjoy a buffet dinner at a local restaurant, and watch a traditional Apsara dance, evoking classical myths.
Today, you will explore the enigmatic 11th-century Beng Mealea Temple, an Angkor-style temple where the vines and roots of ancient trees grow through the broken galleries.
The impressive “lost” temple complex is primarly made from sandstone and contains carvings of Buddhist motifs, along with carvings of scenes from Hindu mythology among the towers, courtyards, and piles of stones lying in heaps among the thick brush.
After lunch, glide along Tonle Sap Lake, cruising to the floating village of Chong Phneas. This is one of the most atmospheric settlements of the lake, where the abundant fish serve to provide the locals with their source of income. Meet some of the fishermen to learn more about their everyday lives. Then, visit a fish farm and a crocodile farm, before returning to Siem Reap for the end of your tour.
