Full description

If you love pandas, what better way to get up close with them and contribute to their welfare than this 1-day volunteer program at Dujiangyan Panda Base in Sichuan? An experience you'll never forget, not only will you work alongside members of the Panda Base staff, you'll be visiting them in their home, learning about conservation and helping to conduct behavioral scientific research on giant and red pandas. You'll arrive at the Research Base entrance around 08:30, where you'll be met by conservation education staff who will act as your translator and guide, before they escort you to the panda enclosure to meet the keeper—your teacher for the day. You'll work alongside the keeper who will assign you tasks including cleaning the pandas' enclosures, food preparation. You may also have the chance to help bathe the pandas and you'll get to observe their behavior at various times throughout the day. After lunch, the staff will meet you and escort you back to the enclosure—the Panda Base is very big and it's easy to get lost in the maze of trails.

Really enjoyed our day. However, there are times (not too long) of real work. Not everyone in the group is keen for this part after the initial go. So some people end up doing much more work while others look around and look at their phones. This is a personal negative issue of mine though! The day was as defined and was really enjoyable. We liked walking in the panda enclosures, picking up their pooh and preparing and providing bamboo. Feeding them closely, one on one, though brief, was a highlight of course, even though you're not to touch. During free time we saw lots of fun play of four young pandas which was magical. There was also a video which probably most people don't get to see and it was super excellent.

The Panda center is located in an amazing environment, where green is the master! Pandas have their own cage and garden, yes they are in captivity, but it seems they are very happy. The volunteer experience was really beautiful and I’m proud have been able to help the center with my work and my money. Daniel my guide, very good English speaking, picked me up and dropped me off at my hotel. He has been by my side the whole day, working with me and take pictures for me. In the center there are many tourists, but not noisy. You can also see red pandas. Beautiful experience.

Such a wonderful experience. The pandas are absolutely beautiful and we feel so privileged to have met them. Joseph at the Panda Base was great- so funny, caring and knowledgeable about the Pandas. He took all measures to ensure that we were safe but that we had a great time too! The work we assisted with was quite challenging at times but as we are not adverse to hard work, we relished it. I actually enjoyed being so active as I don't get to do much manual work any more. I would highly recommend this activity to anyone visiting or living in China. For us, it was worth every penny and more (I cried leaving!) Joseph was an absolute pleasure to meet and work with. Our driver Mark was always punctual and very funny to talk with! If booking I would also strongly recommend that you purchase the Panda cub photo opportunity, to me this was the highlight! No touching/cuddling the cubs so totally ethical. We also received two beautiful certificates. A highly rewarding experience! 10/10
