Travel to Jordan from Sharm el-Sheikh and explore the fabled ancient stone city of Petra. Long-lost to civilization, Petra's fabulous ruins and breathtaking grandeur stand as one of the greatest relics of antiquity in the world.
What to Expect
Established sometime around the 6th century BCE and hidden behind an almost impenetrable barrier of rugged mountains, Petra is one of the greatest remaining treasures of the ancient world. Designed to strike wonder into all who entered it, the rock-carved city of Petra is yours to explore on this full-day excursion from Sharm el-Sheikh.
The drama of visiting Petra begins with the journey along the Siq, a winding, one-kilometer long fissure through the surrounding mountain cliffs. As you come to the end of this beautiful ravine, a very narrow opening offers a glimpse of one of the world's most spectacular sites - the Treasury. Standing over 40 meters tall and carved entirely of rock, this is one of the most elegant relics of antiquity.
More facades beckon us further into the ancient city as one monument leads to the next. The sheer size of the city and the quality of beautifully carved facades is staggering. After the visit of the Treasury we will make our way to the 7000-seat Roman Theater, which dates back to the Byzantine era and even today occasionally hosts performances. We then carry on to the Royal Tombs.
After stopping for lunch, we continue our tour to the hill of al-Habis. A fortress dating back to the Crusades stands at the peak of this hill, and from here we can take in stunning panoramic views of the entire Petra basin below.
At the end of this amazing tour, you will be driven back to Aqaba for the return journey to your hotel in Sharm el-Sheikh.
