Barossa Valley: Red, White & Brew Tour

Barossa Valley: Red, White & Brew Tour

After we pick you up in the city at 9.00am (or 8.30am in Glenelg), we head out of the city to the iconic Barossa Valley. Kies Family Wines is our first stop of the day. The Kies Family have been growing grapes in the region for six generations, some vines are over 80yrs old! The little cottage, once used as a Chaff Mill opened its cellar door in 1985. Their philosophy has always been “not to get bigger, just better”. There is something for everyone here; from a dry Reisling to a Sparkling Rosé, lighter style red, right through to a big Barossa red, sweet wine or a Fortified…there’s even something for the tea connoisseurs. By the time you leave here you’ll feel like one of the family. We head to the western edge of the Barossa to our second stop of the day Pindarie Wines, taking its name from an Aboriginal word meaning “hilly place”. It is a family owned and sustainably run property consisting of sheep, pastures and of course vines. Step through the doors of the restored 1860’s stables and adjacent grain store where we experience a guided tasting of their award-winning wines; from sparkling La Femme Rosé, Fiano, crisp Sangiovese Rosé to their signature TSS blend. Then sit and take in the views of the of the vineyards while enjoying a lunch of regional produce. After lunch we make our way further into the heart of the Barossa to the historic township of Tanunda, where you can enjoy some free time to have a leisurely stroll through the shops and attractions. We’ve discovered the Red and White of the tour…now it’s time to beGin our journey through the most iconic palm lined road in Australia to Seppeltsfield Rd Distillers. Sample their award-winning Barossa Shiraz Gin, it received 99 points at the 2022 International Wine & Spirits Competition – the highest score awarded to any gin to date! Finally, we move on to the last destination of the day, Greenock Brewers. This boutique brewery is located in a historic Wheat Store and producing small batches of traditionally fermented beers, using the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. Meet the brewer and take a tour of the brewery while enjoying a taste of their creations. Now it’s time to relax and reflect on the day as we travel back to the city for a 5pm finish.

Seppeltsfield Winery: Tour and 100-Year-Old Wine Tasting

Seppeltsfield Winery: Tour and 100-Year-Old Wine Tasting

On this unique 30-minute small-group activity you’ll be hosted by a wine educator who will tell you about the history of the Centennial Cellar and its wines dating back to 1878. See 140+ years of wine in barrels and taste directly from the barrel the award-winning 100 year old Para Vintage Tawny. Seppeltsfield Winery’s founder, Joseph Seppelt and his eldest son, Benno, were renowned for their long-term vision for the estate, closely following custodianship principles to ensure a legacy that would be passed on to future generations. Evidence of this can be seen in Benno Seppelt’s Centennial Cellar, which is an unparalleled system of maturing single barrels of vintage tawny for 100 years before release. In 1866, plans to build a new bluestone cellar were undertaken by Joseph Seppelt. In 1878, following the passing of his father, Benno completed the stone cellars and gave instructions that wine from an 1878 barrel was not to be bottled for 100 years. This single barrel of 1878 tawny port remained, maturing in a separate room within the bluestone cellars for 100 years. The tradition of laying down a barrel of the finest wine from each vintage has continued every year since that time. The Centennial Cellar now comprises an unbroken lineage of every vintage from the current year back to 1878, and is a living museum of Australian winemaking history.

Overall the day was really good and we enjoyed the activities we participated in. However, we do think this trip was mis-sold based on the itinerary provided in the description. We were told we would visit the chocolate and cheese factory and the strawberry farm but unfortunately this was not the case. We were told during the drive to our first activity, that because we were doing wine tasting, we didn’t have time to go to the chocolate and cheese factory. The tour guide never mentioned the strawberry farm. We did eventually go to mount lofty, but this was in the late afternoon. The tour guide said it was better in the morning which is when we originally thought we were due to go based on the itinerary provided in the description. We were able to meet & pet the koalas however we did not get to ‘cuddle’ them as outlined in the title of this excursion. Overall, a decent trip and one we’ll remember but it should be reworded to not mis-lead others looking to book this trip.

It was a fantastic day! Mixing up the venue types (winery, distillery, brewery) is a real crowd pleaser and each venue was just wonderful. Dave the bus driver is an absolute champion and gets you sausage rolling around the Barossa to some great (but at times, questionable) tunes. Of all the tour guides I have had, Dave is one of them (sarcasm intended to emulate Dave's great sense of humour). Fantastic value for money, highly recommended.

Great day out in the Barossa Valley, Dave was very informative. The wineries, gin tasting and brewery were excellent. We even managed to call at the chocolate factory.
