What to Expect
Enjoy a full-day exploring Ephesus - once the commercial centre of the ancient world and a highlight of any visit to Turkey. The city’s vast wealth supported its splendid architectural program, which was dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Her enormous temple was rebuilt several times and originates, in its latest form, from the Third-Century B.C.

Marvel at the ancient ruins which also include a theatre, gymnasium, agora, baths, in addition to the Library of Celsus. It is recorded that St. John brought the Virgin Mary to Ephesus after the death of Jesus Christ and that she spent her last days in a small house built for her on Bulbuldagi (Mt. Koressos ). The foundations of the building date back to the First-Century A.D. and were restored during the Byzantine era before it again fell into disrepair. This house has now received the official sanction of the Vatican and Christians observe a commemoration ceremony, the Feast of Assumption, every year on August 15th. It is a popular place of pilgrimage for Christians and Muslims alike.

The house’s association with the Virgin dates only from the 19th-Century, following the visions of a German nun, Katarina Emmerich, who gave an exact description of the situation and appearance of a house at Ephesus in which the Virgin had lived and died. In 1891, on the basis of her account, Lazarists from Smyrna (Izmir) discovered on the south -side of Bulbuldagi the ruins of a small church which had evidently belonged to a monastery, and is now revered as the Virgin's house.

Of the many important ancient sites, Ephesus is the most popular and the most famous. Many acres of carefully excavated ruins present a unique recreation of the ancient splendour of the city. You will certainly need a full day to marvel at the enchanting ruins of a city that was for several civilizations the most important city in Asia Minor.
