Before boarding make sure you spend some time in the gift shop (they will hold your purchases until you get back) and a must stop is the Bell Museum, it will give you a little preview of the sights and stories you will hear aboard the train. Do not eat before going on the VVRR. The lunch is tasty and hearty. You can eat at the station or take it to go on the train. Once on the train you get a tray of grapes, dried apricots, cheese, crackers, pepperoni, salami, turkey and two waters. They also pass out champagne or sparkling cider for a toast. You can buy drinks during the ride up and back. The train ride goes through beautiful scenery so be camera ready. Try your hardest to be in the open air car when you go through the tunnel, it’s a unique experience. When the cab disconnects in Perkinsville try to be outside as you’ll see it ride right by you on the other set of tracks. The cab does rock back and forth so heels are probably not the best idea.

This was fun but it did seem a little too long. The drinks available for purchase on board were delicious and the complimentary snack box was a decent size. I liked that our guide told us when were good times to move to the outdoor car for nice pictures

Travel along a wild and scenic river, only accessible by rail that was first built in 1912. Enjoy comfort and style, exceptional amenities, and outstanding service. Wind your way through a red rock paradise, with tracks that hug the curves of the Verde River.

Relax in spacious living room-style seating near panoramic windows. Individually packaged, freshly made snacks of meats, cheeses, fruits, and brownie bites are served at your seats. Full bar service is available in every car. Stroll around the train to open-air viewing platforms.

Take in astonishing views of a wild and vibrant frontier, historic trestles, bridges, and a 7,000-foot tunnel. See nature tucked into unusual rock formations, red rock pinnacles, and towering crimson cliffs.

Look up to see bald eagles and hawks float effortlessly on the breeze above Javelina. Keep an eye open for wild burros, jackrabbits, and many other canyon creatures who have been peacefully coexisting with this heritage railroad for more than 100 years.

On select dates take part in an evening starlight ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad. See the canyon amid the brilliant variation of colors at sunset and twilight. Starlight rides follow the new moon when the cosmic constellations are at their brightest. Travel through Verde Valley, between two national forests, and along the Sycamore Canyon Wilderness.

  • Infant age is 0-1 year. Any guest aged 1 and over will be charged an adult rate. All guests aged 1 year and over must have a paid ticket to board the train. If this was not paid at the time of booking, you will be charged by the operator for any unpaid tickets on the day of travel

Our “tour guide” and bartender Nate …. was great. Very knowledgeable and also amusing with a joke repertoire that usually elicited groans. The “before the ride meal” (that could also be taken on the train) was surprisingly good. Once on the train, I expected one snack box per couple, so I was pleasantly surprised when it was one per person (one went home with us). Nate had a side-kick in training who was pleasant and took some pressure off of “selfies.” Nate in his bartending role made great Bloody Mary’s, and the candied bacon with the other components made the drink yummy!! The scenery is amazing, the pace is super leisurely and I highly recommend it. It’s sort of a step back in time, and even though it consumes over half the day (depending on the time of year), if you are in the Sedona area … put it on the “to do” list.
