What to Expect
This 8-hour tour of the Quercy region visits 3 of its most fascinating sites, including the prehistoric cave paintings of Pech Merle, and the 14th-Century Pont Valentré over the Lot River.

First you will head towards the fascinating cave of Perch Merle to see some authentic cave drawings, paintings, and etchings. Extending for more than 1 mile from the entrance the caverns walls are painted with dramatic murals that date from the Gravettian culture of 25,000 years BC. Some of the paintings and engravings, however, could date from the later Magdalenian era of 16,000 BC.

Explore walls of 7 of the chambers of Pech Merle and discover lifelike images of a woolly mammoth, spotted horses, single colored horses, bovines, reindeer, handprints, and some humans. Footprints of children, preserved in what was once clay, have been found more than half a mile underground.

Next depart for the wonderful village of St. Cirq Lapopie, considered to be one of the most beautiful villages in France. Its position was originally selected for defense purposes, as it is perched on a steep cliff, 330 feet (100 meters) above the River Lot.

The town is one of the best preserved in the area, and resembles an open-air museum of the 13th through 16th-Centuries. After it was "discovered" by the Post-Impressionist Henri Martin, it became popular with other artists and was the home of the famous surrealist writer André Breton.

Finally, the tour takes you to Cahors to admire the magnificent medieval fortified Pont Valentré over the River Lot. Built between 1308 and 1378, with 6 Gothic arches and 3 square towers, the bridge first opened for use in 1350, and was originally fortified at both ends, of which only the western one has not survived.
