What to Expect
Discover the best that the Dordogne region has to offer on a full-day guided tour from Sarlat. You will begin your 9-hour excursion with a guided walking tour of Sarlat, overlooking the valleys of the Vézère and the Dordogne. Learn how the town developed around a large Benedictine abbey of Carolingian origin.
Because modern history has largely passed it by, Sarlat has remained beautifully preserved and is one of the most representative towns of 14th to 16th-Century France. Discover some of Sarlat’s most famous monuments and buildings, including the mysterious small stone towers known as the "Lanterns of the Dead".
Continue to the 2 delightful villages of Beynac and La Roque Gageac, where you will get to stroll around the charming streets. While in La Roque Gageac, enjoy a boat ride along the Dordogne River, and admire the mighty castles that line the banks of the river.
Your next stop will be Les Eyzies de Tayac, the world capital of Prehistory. The town is where the first skeletons of Cro-Magnons, the earliest known examples of Homo sapiens, were discovered. Visit the National Prehistory Museum with your guide, who will explain the basics of common history as the life and culture of Homo sapiens are revealed.
End the day with a visit to Lascaux, where you will discover a perfect reproduction of the original cave that was discovered in 1940 by 4 teenagers. Known for containing some of the best examples of Upper Paleolithic cave art, the cave paintings at Lascaux are over 17,000 years old and are enshrined on UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
