Sao Filipe

The day begins with pickup from your accommodation in Praia and departs towards Nelson Mandela airport for your 35 minute flight to Fogo Island. The island is named after the imposing volcano that resides on it, which is still active today although the last eruption was in 2014. Upon arrival, visit the capital of the island, São Filipe, and wander around this charming little town lined with colorful houses. Continue the tour to Salinas, a small pebble beach where you can learn about the island’s geology and watch fishermen returning to shore with the day’s catch. Drive northwards to the village of Mosteiros and then across the eastern coast to reach the village of Cova Figueira. Enjoy a photo stop at the scenic Achada Furna and Cabeça Fundão along the way. Arrive at Chã das Caldeiras National Park and admire uninterrupted views of the volcano and rugged surrounding landscape. From there, visit a local coffee plantation to taste some of the best coffee and wine in the world. Enjoy a break for lunch, then head off into Monte Velha Forest, an area of fertile mountains and microclimates. Discover the scenic island of Sao Filipe on a half-day guided walking tour. Meet your guide at your accommodation's reception for a brief program overview before heading to the main square to delve into the island's history. Explore Casa das Bandeiras, the vibrant fish and vegetable market, and unravel the secrets of the colonial houses (Sobrados). The tour concludes with a return to your accommodation.

7:00 am. Departure from your hotel to the Salinas Lagoon at 4,300 m.a.s.l. between the Misti, Ubinas and Pichupichu volcanoes. During the whole year we can see vicuñas and sometimes llamas and alpacas. We can also see the viscacha, and if we are lucky, we can also see some Andean foxes. We can also observe a plant that only grows at more than 4,000 m.a.s.l. called Yareta (azorella compacta). Here we can see three different species of flamingos. - Phoenicopteras chilensis (Chilean flamingo). - Phoenicoparras andinas (large Andean Parihuana). - Phoenicoparras jamesi (small Andean parihuana). If there is not too much water we can even cross the lagoon in our 4x4. After visiting this protected area of the reserve we will return to Arequipa, being able to take pictures all along the way of beautiful landscapes as well as of the Misti volcano. See less

I will meet you at your accommodation in cha das caldeiras where we start with a small briefing, I will introduce you my land and all the surrounding areas of the volcano and give you the instructions for this hike. Afterwards we will start our hike starting from 1700 m above the sea level. the first hour goes easily trough lava field from the last eruption till 2000 m, after that you will face a serpentine path that goes trough rocks and ashes till 2300, here you will enjoy a wonderful view of the entire crater and the surrounding islands. When you reach the crater of the volcano you will see that it really worth to take this journey. The most funny part is the way down that goes trough ashes till the surrounding villages. At the end I will bring you back at your accommodation.

On this adventure you will discover the most visited spots on Fogo Island and explore with a local guide the views of the volcano of Fog, you will go around the largest volcano in Cape Verde from the city of São Filipe passing through some small villages located in coastal areas, visit the largest coffee plantation in the country and learn about the interesting stories of how it arrived on the island, you can also enjoy a local lunch in monasteries and even get to know a baobab tree, one of the oldest in cape verde with more than 600 years.
