Oaxaca: Mezcal Adventure

Oaxaca: Mezcal Adventure

During this experience, you'll be taken through the Valley of Tlacolula to Santiago Matalan. During the ride, you'll be introduced to the culture of mezcal and its geographical context. Once in Santiago Matatlán, you'll be visiting an agave plantation to learn about these plants, their life cycle, varieties, and uses. Then, visit two different mezcal distilleries to see real production going on. From a home scale family-owned business with a long tradition of making mezcal in a rustic way to another way of production more sophisticated, yet artisanal. As each maestro mezcalero gives a personal touch to every batch, each tasting on-site means immersion in the mezcal culture. Afterward, you'll make a stop for lunch in a nice and neat last distillery with a great local cuisine restaurant. By this point of the trip, you'll already know how to taste mezcal as an expert. The premium quality mezcal you’ll taste here will be great for a last toast before heading back home.

The Mezcal Journey

The Mezcal Journey

Hi! I'm Ricardo Proudly originally from Oaxaca. Where with my family, we farm agave and making mezcal. We started our adventure from the center of the city of Oaxaca towards Santiago Matatlán, a town better known as: "The World's Mezcal Capital" as the largest drink producer in all of Mexico. There we visited a couple of distilleries to see the handicraft method in the production of mezcal. Our goal is to learn every step of the way and evaluate all the hard work behind this drink. On our tour, we will have the opportunity to see private areas, which are normally restricted, such as a cellar where they rest and add mezcals in barrels; even packing areas where you can participate and be an important part of the process. After learning how mezcal is made, we went to the tasting, where we do an unlimited mezcal tasting and talk about different categories, classes, and varieties. We continue our journey to the amazing agave fields, where you can capture the best photos and even carry out activities such as plantation, cut or harvest depending on the season. Finally, we offer a rich and traditional Oaxacan food already included and, of course... more Mezcal! + If the date you are looking for is not available, please message us to arrange.

Hierve el Agua and Mezcal Distillery (Small Groups)

Hierve el Agua and Mezcal Distillery (Small Groups)

The tour starts at 9:00 am, we all meet at the Jardín Etnobotánico entrance, from there we will go to Hierve el Agua, since this trip is longer than an hour we will do a quick stop at a traditional bakery that is 45 min away from the city center. We will have a bread tasting and you will have 15 min to get a snack, go to the bathroom or just to strecth your legs. Once in Hierve el Agua you will have two hours to explore and enjoy this place, we suggest you to have food before the mezcal tasting, you can either eat at hierve el agua (street food, only cash) or at a restaurant buffet ($200 mx per person not drinks included, cards and cash). Our last spot to visit will be a mezcal distillery where you will learn the process to make mezcal, you will visit a plantation of agave espadín and at the end we will have a mezcal tasting. We finish the tour at the same spot we start it, jardin etnobotánico entrance.
