Full description
Enjoy a fascinating day out at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum! Experience the area's maritime history through engaging, interactive exhibits. Learn about area's original inhabitants, the Chumash, and how they built their plank canoes, called a tomol. Touch an otter pelt, and learn why they were almost hunted to extinction. See videos of legendary surfers and fire one of the Goleta Cannons. Then learn about the Honda Disaster, where seven U.S. Navy Destroyers sank in 1923. Hear readings from the diaries of 4 survivors of the 1851 sinking of the Winfield Scott, a ship running gold, mail, and passengers from San Francisco to Panama. Visitors can also see four to six feature films in the 88-seat, high-definition Munger Theater. Film selections include two films by James Cameron, Shackleton's Antarctic Adventure, and Santa Barbara and the Sea, a 13,000-year maritime history of the area.
