In the town of Potsdam, just outside Berlin, is the spectacular Sanssouci estate, the former summer residence of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. Sanssouci Palace and its magnificent grounds offer myriad treasures to discover – here are the 5 highlights.
Built in 1745, Sanssouci Palace was designed in the playful Rococo style as per Frederick the Great's wishes, since he wanted the palace to be an escape from the pomp of Berlin.
The majestic New Palace was built in the more impressive baroque style so that it could be used to receive dignified guests. It's considered to be the last great Prussian palace.
A passionate art collector, Frederick the Great built himself a private museum in Sanssouci. The lavish gallery houses masterworks by illustrious artists like Caravaggio.
This gorgeous and ornately decorated grotto, featuring a statue of the Roman god Neptune and a giant sea shell made of real shells, served the sole purpose of adorning the garden.
Although Frederick the Great always stated that he wanted to be buried at Sanssouci, his wishes were not honored until the 205th anniversary of his death in 1991.
Sanssouci park is huge. Rather than tire yourself walking all day, why not rent a bike from one of the countless rental spots all over Potsdam? The park's large avenues are perfect for a leisurely and picturesque cycle.
The interiors of the different buildings in Sanssouci are absolutely worth visiting, especially for history buffs. However, if you're traveling on a tight budget, you can still have an amazing day out by simply visiting the park, which offers a bounty of delights wholly free of charge.
Einfach einwandfrei! Immer gerne!
great tour but probably most enjoyable when you speak german, the live tour guide made it hard to listen to the english recorded information, we did get information in english at the stops but this was less detailed than the german story
The Potsdam excursion was really interesting and full of historical events to remember. Our guide Norbert was very informative and had good knowledge of facts to illustrate the atmosphare. Highly recommended by us!
We were very lucky. We had a wonderful guide Rob M. He was knowledgeable and funny. It was a drizzling gray day, our group was small, transportation was desolate, it was like we were on a private tour.
