Full description
You'll meet your guide at the Alexander Column on Palace Square. Your tour will begin with a visit to the Orthodox Cathedral of Saint-Isaac, which was built in the 19th century. Up until the revolution, this building was a center of religious life in Saint Petersburg. Being the 3rd-largest cathedral in Europe, it has a magnificent view of the city and the Neva River from its largest dome of 102 meters. Enjoy a stroll along the Griboyedov Canal to your next visit: the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan. The elegant Neoclassical style of this sprawling church likens it more the temples of Ancient Greece than to an orthodox basilica, and its palatial columns are one of the most recognizable images of the Nevsky Prospect. The cathedral, which holds the miraculous icon of Kazan Mother of God, is one of the main shrines of the country. Moreover, it is closely connected with the events of the Patriotic War. The Cathedral keeps the military trophies of the defeated French army gathered during the war in 1812 and the keys to the fortresses and cities of Europe taken by the Russian army in 1813-1814. Close to the walls of the Kazan Cathedral the great General Mikhail Kutuzov is buried. You will finish your journey at the Church of the Saviour on Blood. While you admire its vibrant colors and striking shapes, your guide will explain the violent history behind the orthodox church's origins, built upon the spot where Tsar Alexander II was fatally wounded. Inside, you'll be left in awe by the multi-colored mosaics depicting religious scenes.
