Full description
Begin your day early with pickup from your hotel or accommodation in San Pedro de Atacama and start heading 43 miles towards the south, where you will find the Lascar Volcano. Known for being the only active volcano in northern Chile, it is one of the most famous and exciting challenges in the desert.

On your way to the volcano, you will be provided with a nutritious breakfast and hot beverages to warm up your body and give you plenty of energy for the adventure ahead. When arriving at the base of the volcano, your guide will give you all the necessary instructions for a safe and pleasant hike.

From there, start a 2.5-mile climb up the volcano for around 3-4 hours, eventually conquering the 15,000-foot ascent to the top of the crater. Your guide will make sure everyone in the group is comfortable with their own pace and that no one is left behind by way of allowing for rest times during the climb, if needed.

Even though it does not seem like a long distance, the sharp rise and rarefied air can be challenging. When reaching the top, you will have an amazing sense of accomplishment as you look out over the crater, 984 feet deep with fumaroles, and feel the intense smell of sulfur, while also enjoying a spectacular view of the Andes.

If the conditions of the group allow for it, you will continue on for another 40 minutes to reach the top of the volcano, located at 18,470 feet high. After enjoying the views for a bit, the descent lasts for about two hours. Reach the base of the volcano again and head back to San Pedro de Atacama for hotel drop-off.
