Full description
The tour will begin with a pickup at 8.00 AM from your hotel. You will head to the coast along the impressive highway roads before arriving at the 'Cueva del Indio'. A short hike will lead you to the beach where you can witness stunning cliff formations on the coastline before heading into the hidden cave entrance. This cave was a ceremonial spot for ancient indigenous cultures and you can see their heritage with the hundreds of carved petroglyphs on the walls of the cave. Your knowledgeable guide will explain the art, culture, and religion of the Taínos. You will then head towards Karstic mountain region of Arecibo. Start by taking a hike through the forest with your guide explaining the flora and fauna of the forest and outlining the geological properties of the area that resulted in these caves. Again, you will be able to see more fascinating carved petroglyphs, an important part of the ancient religion here. The next stop is the 'Cueva Ventana' and its marvelous formation that creates a window view of the Arecibo river valley. Rest for lunch in a local spot that specializes in 'mofongo', delicious fried plantains. After lunch we have a short ride to Caguana Park You'll visit the small museum then head out into the archaeological site to see the rectangular plazas that were used historically to play the rubber ball game called batú. These plazas were also used for public ceremonies such as the 'Areyto'. You guide will explain the interesting history of this is greater detail. After this, you will be taken back to your hotel, arriving at around 5.00 PM.
