What to Expect
Take a drive on the Pan-American Highway towards the city of Alajuela. Along the way, you’ll pass the Agriculture Monument, the Monument to Juan Santamaria, and Mango Park, on this full-day tour from San Jose.
On the way up to the Poas Volcano, you’ll make a stop to learn about coffee, the country’s golden bean, before continuing on the drive that passes fern, flower, and strawberry farms. You’ll notice a change in temperature and vegetation as you climb up to the cloud forest.
At the volcano you’ll have time to observe the impressive main crater with its sulfur fumaroles. Afterwards you’ll hike on a trail to the beautiful Botos Lagoon, where you’ll learn about the park’s different ecosystems.
Your trip continues towards the Caribbean, with a stop to visit La Paz Waterfall Gardens, a natural park where you’ll enjoy a walk along a trail that leads to the spectacular White Magic Waterfall.
At the park you’ll also see the largest butterfly observatory in the country, the impressive hummingbird gallery, serpentarium, old house, bird house, and the frogs exhibit.
