Puerto Iguazu: San Ignacio Mission and Wanda Mines Tour

Puerto Iguazu: San Ignacio Mission and Wanda Mines Tour

We will pick you up early in the morning from your hotels in Puerto Iguazú and drive to San Ignacio, about 230 km away. Among the thick missionary jungle rises the ancient ruins of the Reduction of San Ignacio, the remains of a civilization designed by Jesuits and built by Guaraní hands that stood out for its efficiency almost 400 years ago and that is why it must have perished. The façade of its temple was made entirely of pink sandstone in 1610 and its American baroque design was reconstructed by a group of scientists during the last century. The reduction had been buried under the jungle for almost two centuries. Thousands of tourists visit it every year. It is located in the center of the town of San Ignacio, on Route 12, 60 kilometers from Posadas. The right wall of the temple today looks impeccable, since during the summer a group of specialists was restoring it. This is possible because the World Monuments Foundation donated 50,000 dollars so that, step by step, all the walls of this monument which, due to the tropical climate of the region, tends to be covered with small microorganisms that decompose it, can be left shining. Then, after discovering the culture and heritage of the San Ignacio Ruins, we will go to the Wanda Mines, on the banks of the Paraná River, where we will find the entrance sign and different artisans offering some of the stones. Among the characteristics of this mine, its distinctive feature is the fact that it is in the open air. Visitors can walk around, explore its caves and even observe the exact moment when the operators make some of the explosions to continue drilling the basalt. Before returning, we will visit a local Yerba mate producer. There, you will be able to tour the facilities and sample local infusions. Once the tour is concluded, you will have some free time. If desired, you can purchase regional souvenirs and sweets. Then, after discovering the treasures that the Selva Misionera can hide, you will be taken to your hotels at the end of the day in Puerto Iguazu.

The tour is nice. We only waited 10 minutes for them to pick us up at the agreed time, but keep in mind that the transfer is long and it takes almost the whole day to do the tour (7am-830pm). Food is not included, they stop at an economical Argentine restaurant, only we did not try it (we are celiacs, we brought the food and went to eat at a nearby park). The mines are very pretty and the visit takes about 1.5 hours, then you can buy souvenirs and semi-precious stones, but it is expensive (we bought a small amethyst). Keeping the ruins in mind is the best, the guide at this point deceived us by saying that he explained first and then we took photos, which was not true, when he finished explaining he took us to the exit so take photos during the tour and do not case. They gave us an extra to visit a place where they make Argentine mate, very interesting, even though we don't like that drink, this extra was very nice. The transport buses in very good condition.

The excursion was fantastic! It was a bit longer than anticipated, as it is 6 hrs round trip for the drive (12.5 hr day), but it was great to see the country and I dont mind long drives. The van was very comfortable but a bit short with leg room, especially for that long of a drive, and when the person in front of you reclines. The guide did not speak English, but was very accommodating and there were English speaking guides at the mine and mission. There were a few extra stops, at an agricultural coop, to eat an excellent lunch, and a few shops.

We were picked up at the hotel on time. We loved the Wanda mines and it was very impressive. Driving further to the ruins is very far, but we knew that. Arrived for lunch right next to the mission, ate my best steak there this holiday so far. The tour lasted about 1.5 hours. A little too long, but there is also something to see. The whole day trip lasted from 07:00 - 21:00 until we got back to the hotel. But it was worth it. Kudos to the bus driver, he was always friendly and explained a lot. And great how he drove the 500 km.

It is a tour for adults, for the long stretch. Wonderful guides, unique places. You learn history, visit incredible places. The entire experience is unmissable. Wanda and its precious stones, the impressive Jesuit ruins and at the end the herbal cooperative. Excellent

Excellent, the driver, Luis is a very kind and attentive person, we were very comfortable with him. The tour guides of the places are also very nice and knowledgeable about what they show.
