What to Expect
Hidden in plain sight in San Francisco are some historical gems of the glorious 1920s and 30s. See a few prime examples of Art Deco architecture on a tour that’s meant to pique your interest to discover more.

Start your 2-hour walking tour on Mission Street, inside the lobby of the old main Post Office that was designed by Gilbert Stanley Underwood in the Streamline Moderne style.

The restored historic lobby contains a series of 27 tempera murals by Russian immigrant painter Anton Refregier. Inspired by the work of Diego Rivera, the murals depict the history of California. The exterior of the building features dolphin friezes above the doorways and windows.

You’ll head on to the Stock Exchange Tower at 155 Sansome Street, a 1930 addition to the adjacent San Francisco Stock Exchange. The tower was designed by Timothy L. Pflueger, one of San Francisco's premier architects of the Art Deco period.

Admire some of Pflueger's other major skyscrapers as well, including 140 New Montgomery and the 450 Sutter Street Medical Building. This spectacular tower is world-renowned for its unique neo-Mayan design elements.

See some other important buildings of the era, including the high Art Deco of the Shell Building at 100 Bush, and the eclectic romanticism of the Hunter Dulin Building at 111 Sutter. Along the way, your guide will point out other traces of the 1920s and 30s, such as See's Candy.
