San Francisco Acatepec

Visit Santa María Tonanzintla and San Francisco Acatepec to admire the beautiful Churchs of Indian Baroque style. We will also visit the world´s largest pyramid at the archaeological zone of Cholula with its 365 churches. Continue to Puebla, Unesco´s World Heritage site, where the majority of its buildings are decorated with tiles and beautifully sculpted freestone; we will also see its majestic Cathedral at the main Square, the chapel of the Rosary, considered the eighth wonder of the art world.

Depart from Puebla City’s main plaza (“Zocalo”) and travel by traditional double-decker bus 5 miles to the west to the “double” town of Cholula, which brings together San Pedro and San Andres. Each of these towns has its own main square and church, but they are so close to each other that the border has been lost and they are both thought of as the same town. The panoramic tour starts in San Pedro Cholula at the Plaza de la Concordia, which is flanked by the Convento de San Gabriel, built by Franciscans in 1549 on the site of the ruins of a temple dedicated to Quetzalcóat. Continue towards the Great Pyramid of Cholula, the largest in the world. On the top, admire the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Temple, built by the Spanish in 1549. Continue to San Andrés Cholula, and stop for a moment to visit the beautiful parish. Climb aboard the bus again to transfer to the temples of San Francisco Acatepec and Santa María Tonanzintla. Marvel at the Mexican baroque style. There is no corner that hasn't been decorated. Continue to San Pedro Cholula, passing the wizard’s house, and Copa de Oro cider factory. Finally, stop at San Pedro Cholula Zocalo, and enjoy some free time to visit the Great Pyramid, local market, Royal Chapel, San Gabriel Convent, and Concordia Plaza.

Arrive in the city of Cholula and visit the Great Pyramid, the archaeological site and the Museum. Ascend to the Our Lady of Remedies Church, a church built on top of the pyramid. Later, visit the church of Santa María Tonantzintla - unique for its interior decoration composed of indigenous motifs and Catholic elements. Learn about how the Indigenous peoples of Tonatzintla wanted to represent Tlaloc, the god of rain, in the dome of the sky chapel. Witness how every little carved face is not an angel, but rather an Indigenous person who died and was reincarnated in the sky. Finally, visit the church of San Francisco Acatepec - a beautiful and unforgettable church. After this, discover one of Mexico's cities with the greatest cultural heritage during a fascinating tour of “Puebla de los Ángeles”. Admire the extraordinary scenery protected by the Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl volcanoes. Visit the cathedral, which is cross-shaped and consists of 5 naves. See how the central altar was constructed in an octagonal shape whilst the other 4 altars face in the direction of compass points. Marvel at the bell towers which are the largest in Mexico. Continue on to visit the famous Capilla del Rosario, which in its day was considered as one of the 8 wonders of the world. Step inside the chapel to see a statue of the Virgin of the Rosary, surrounded by numerous saints, angels, and martyrs. At the end of the tour, stroll down Calle de los Dulces and get to know the many iconic typical desserts. At 6 PM return to Mexico City where your tour will end.

After pickup from your accommodation in Puebla, you’ll head straight to the archaeological site of Cholula, home to the largest pyramid in the world. Climb to the top of the pyramid and wander the large plateau of the pyramid, taking note of the ornate church and views of the surrounding volcanoes. Afterward, head to the Church of Santa Maria Tonantzintla in the town of Cholula, a chapel famous for its elaborate interior decorations and significance to local religious tradition. Then head to a pottery studio to taste artisanal spirits, including eggnog and other locally-crafted liquors.  You’ll end your day by heading to the brilliantly colorful Church of San Francisco Acatepec to explore the exquisite details of the mosaics, inside and out. Return back with drop-off at any point in Puebla City. Sundays and Mondays the Archaeological site is closed.

Re-board the tram and stop at the San Francisco Acatepec and Santa María Tonanzintla Temples to admire their Mexican Baroque-style. Continue to San Pedro Cholula, passing by the wizards house, and Copa de Oro cider factory, to finally stop at San Pedro Cholula Zocalo  to visit the Great Pyramid,  the local market, the Royal Chapel, San Gabriel Convent and Concordia Plaza. Enjoy time on your own to have a look around before returing to Puebla around 4.30 pm.

After picking you up at your hotel (only applicable in the historic center) We will visit the secret 5 de Mayo tunnels located a few minutes from the historic center. We will tell you the history of Cholula through audiovisuals and in Cholula we will give you free time to go up to the Temple of Remedies and enter the archaeological zone if you wish. Heading to Atlixco we will visit a temple called San Francisco de Acatepec, which is completely lined with Talavera on the outside. In Atlixco you will visit the wide staircase, glass viewpoint and you will have time Free in the town to eat and take photographs. At the end we will leave you at your hotel or place of greatest convenience.

The day begins with pickup from your hotel in Puebla and travels to the city of Cholula. Visit the Great Pyramid, the largest pyramid in the world with a history dating back to the 3rd century B.C. After your tour of the pyramid, enjoy a tasting session of traditional Mexican liquors as well as a popular eggnog beverage. Next, visit the San Francisco Acatepec's Church, best known for its impressive Talavera mosaic and red brick facade. Later, continue the tour to some of the region’s best examples of Baroque architecture. Stop at the Church of Santa Maria Tonantzintla, built in the 16th century, to admire its truly incredible and intricate interior. We start by picking you up at your hotel, home or lodging. Our first stop will be at the Archaeological Zone of Cholula, enter one of the largest structures in the world in terms of volume, at the top of the pyramid is the Sanctuary of the Virgen de los Remedios, a colonial church. This sanctuary is a place of great religious importance and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding area. You can also explore the network of subway tunnels that have been excavated in the pyramid and allow you to explore its interior. We will visit the Ex-Convent of San Gabriel and its 49 domes. Afterwards we will have a tasting and purchase of the traditional cider. Our next stop will be at the Church of Santa Maria Tonantzintla made by indigenous hands where you can admire the classic Mexican Indigenous Baroque style, the market in town offers a variety of fresh produce, handicrafts and typical food. It is a good place to try local food and buy souvenirs. And finally the third stop will be at the church of San Francisco Acatepec, this church is famous for its baroque decoration with its own distinctive character. Its facade is decorated with intricate sculptures and details in bright colors that reflect the richness of baroque art in the region.
