San Cristobal: Chiflon Waterfalls & Montebello Day Tour

1. San Cristobal: Chiflon Waterfalls & Montebello Day Tour

Start this full-day adventure into the wilderness of Chiapas with a morning pick-up from your hotel in San Cristobal. Drive to the impressive El Chiflon Waterfalls near the colonial city of Comitan, and hike an approximate 1-mile (1.5 kilometers) to the top of the multi-staged cascades, surrounded by mountains and rainforest. Known for creating the impression of a pair of “angel’s wings” that appear to emerge from the mountain, the falls also offer striking turquoise waters that you can take a dip in at the end of your walk. Continue to Montebello Lakes, a collection of 52 crystal clear lakes surrounded by pine forest. Here, you can dive into the refreshing blue waters, and even cross in a cayuco (a small, rustic wooden raft) to see beautiful orchids. In total, you will visit about 5 to 7 of the main lakes to experience the contrasting colors, which can vary from dark green, to bright emerald, turquoise, and even purple or red, depending on the mineral content. You will then be transferred back to San Cristobal for a drop off at your hotel, or the Zocalo (Plaza 31 de Marzo) if you prefer.

What people are saying about San Cristóbal de las Casas

Carlos was a fantastic guide, and added even more value to a just great tour. For example, we asked him to visit the highest part of the falls, which normally you don't have time to visit, and he made sure that it was possible for us, even if this way he had to follow us at a great pace up to the mountain. The lake is also a worth seeing. At the end of the day, this tour was a very good use of money and time of the holiday.

Tight turn. Departure at 3:30 am! We made the choice not to go back to San Cristobal and sleep in Palenque! The luggage follows. Top 12 pm meal, varied local buffet. You have to add an extension of 125 pesos to the palenque guide if you want to take a tour of the jungle and a pity that we didn't have time to go to the museum (included in the site ticket)!

Not to be missed

Tuor very nice to discover two very beautiful places, trains arrived at the waterfalls have changed our agency because they brought us back to San Cristobal first and we found ourselves very well !! The two drivers also guided us.

Lots of driving in an uncomfortable minibus, but the El Chiflon waterfalls are worth the effort. The lakes of Montebello are charming but not essential.

In one day, I went around a lot of waterfalls and lots of lakes, and the explanation and movement in English of the guide was wonderful.
