San Cristóbal: Indigenous Communities & City Tour Guided

The guide was great and explained a lot. Chamula is very unique, you really have to see it with your own eyes. In Zinacantàn I thought it was a shame that we only visited one cooperative and nothing else about the place.

Our driver/guide was fluent in Tzotzil (the language of the indigenous of these communities), Spanish, and English and was very good in providing details regarding the region and the people. We stepped into a market in Zanacatan with women demonstrating their weaving craft. We got to try pox in 3 different flavors, dressed in traditional Zinacatan clothing, then stepped into a kitchen for cafe olla and authentic tacos. We visited a square, the Zinacatan letters, and a church. Chamula was fascinating, but much more reserved. The Chamula church is something you will see nowhere else,. We felt both intrusive and privileged to be permitted to step into that world. After this, we walked around the square, then made our way back to San Cris. The reason we docked 1 star is that there was no tour of San Cris, perhaps due to weather, which was the reason we chose THIS indigenous tour. We were hoping for some history of the city of San Cristobal, which we did not get.

Really interesting tour, not to be missed. Rodrigo was a great guide who was so knowledgeable about everywhere we visited. He translated everything into Spanish and English and still managed to keep everyone’s attention. The two village stops were both fascinating. The workshop at Zincantan also provided us with tacos as a snack which was a lovely bonus. I would definitely recommend this tour.
