Full description
Start with the salt mines and take a breathtaking ride from the city of Salzburg into the Bavarian Alps along the Kings Lake-Ache passing the Obersalzberg, where the second headquarters of the Third Reich used to be.  Afterwards, the tour continues to its highlight – the 490 year old salt mines at Berchtesgaden. Slip into traditional miners’ clothes and take the miners’ train deep into the mountain. Experience the fascinating underground world of the salt-miners and discover the charm of the magnificently illuminated subterranean landscape. Take the slides down to the salt lake which you will be crossing by boat. After this 2-hour unique tour you will have the opportunity to explore the little picturesque town of Berchtesgaden tasting some Bavarian specialties.  After a short break go to the Sound of Music Tour - a wonderful ride with amazing views! Tour the picturesque World Heritage City of Salzburg as well as the beautiful landscapes where the opening scenes of the movie The Sound of Music were filmed. The enormous success of The Sound of Music Broadway Musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein premiering in 1959 caused film director Robert Wise and 250 crew members to turn Salzburg and its surroundings into the Sound of Music film location in 1964.   Right after release, the film became a tremendous success, awarded with 5 Oscars, becoming the highest grossing movie ever and reaching cult status over the years. Both the musical and film are based on the "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers" written by Maria von Trapp in 1949.  Do follow the traces of the Trapp family and take a tour through Salzburg and its surroundings. Visit all of the original film sets and just imagine being Julie Andrews, the main character in the film, playing Maria von Trapp. Learn about the historical and architectural landmarks of Salzburg as well as the Lake District while enjoying the highlights of the movie. Relax and listen to the Original Sound of Music soundtrack and of course feel free to sing Edelweis and much more.

Tour consists of two parts approx 4 hours each with a generous stop of coffee/pastries plus an hour back at the joining part. Some of the sights for the SOM tour need to be done on your own (Mirabell Gardens)), but they’re located just steps from the joining place. We had 8 people in a van which was a very snug fit for tall travelers. Our guide was personable and knowledgeable. The salt mine was interesting and informative, and fun with the two slides down into the mine!

Salt mine tour was very fun and interesting. Great for kids and families. Ride to the mine was beautiful and we also had a nice time in Berchtesgaden and enjoyed a fantastic Bavarian meal at the restaurant the guide recommended. Our Sound of Music tour was definitely the highlight and David did an amazing job. He always kept us engaged, made us laugh and made the whole tour so fun and interesting. All the facts and singing and sightseeing made this a very memorable tour and one that I would highly recommend!

The two activities in themselves were good although the sound of music tour was a lot on the bus and the farthest distance was still too commercially tinted to the local village. This stop out and more time at the other locations would have been better. The afternoon activity in the salt mine was fantastic. Both activities with very good guide. A minus point: if you sell it as a day package then you also have to make it a day. We were dropped in the bus depot at 13 o'clock after part 1 and just had to wait an hour for the start of part 2. That is not the intention of a day trip of course.
