Top 7 things to do in Salzburg
A fabulous city with a rich history and beautiful architecture, Salzburg is an oft-overlooked gem of Europe. Here are the top 7 things to do with your time in this fairy tale of a city.
1. Salzburg's Old Town
On the banks of the aqua-hued River Salzach lies the enchanting historic center of Salzburg. Treat yourself to a tour of its winding streets and copper topped cathedrals.
5. Salzburg Zoo
Nothing average about this zoo! Lush animal habitats spread out over floodplains and rocky hillsides, making for such unusal sights as zebras grazing in a green meadow.
6. Salzburg Cathedral
As the seat of Salzburg's historically powerful Roman Catholic Archdiocese, one can expect magnificence from this stunning landmark. Fun fact: Mozart was baptized here!
7. Hohensalzburg Fortress
Visible from miles away, Salzburg's iconic mountain-top fortress is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. Be sure to meander its golden chambers and kingly halls.
Planning Your Visit
How many days to spend in Salzburg?
With a population of under 150,000, Salzburg is a relatively small town. You'd be able to see most of the city's highlights in a day if you're hustling. But take it easy, and leave enough time to get your strudel on! Three days is recommended, especially if you plan to take a daytrip to Hellbrunn Palace or elsewhere.
Where to stay?
Salzburg is brimming with great hotels and top notch hostels, so take your pick! Do yourself a favor and find a cozy spot on either side of the river, close to the city center.

What people are saying about Salzburg
Our tour was with Panorama tour group with guide (and driver) Anne Marie. She was fabulous and gave extensive history of the sites as it related to the film and other interesting historical facts. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better experience and better weather. Since the pick up point is in the Thursday open market, it added to the experience. In the passenger van we adults all masked up. My young daughter (Age 3) was able to keep interested the whole time, only struggled the last 15 mins or so, which is remarkable after a four hour tour. I recommend bringing healthy on the go snacks and water (to be eaten outside the van) because there are not many food/water options due to the pandemic. Otherwise, we had plenty of bathroom breaks and LOADS of information. We also had a small group of 5 adults and one child. This company has been doing these tours since the movie first became popular and also received the local seal of approval from my hotel staff. Thumbs up!
Travel back in time with Mozart’s music. This evening was filled with a wonderful made traditional Austrian meal set in an acoustic dream room complete with period architecture and costumes. The musicians were of a high caliber and seemed to enjoy the evening as much as the audience. The wait staff went above and beyond to make sure it was as natural an experience as possible during this pandemic. Richardo and his wait staff colleagues were relentless (yet unobtrusive) to attend to everyone’s needs. I loved my wine suggestion and at the end of the evening, my sleeping three year old was carried down the stairs to the taxi that was called for us. It was a perfect evening complete with candelabra! It is a must do splurge in Salzburg.
A much anticipated tour. Luckily, there wasn't that much tourists, so we got the mini bus all to ourselves. The one and a half ride going to Hallstatt was enjoyable and informational. I had bits of information about Austria, Salzburg and the like. Saw some the picturesques view of Salzburg, over guide made us even close our eyes to surprise us with such a beautiful view.
Fantastic cultured cooking experience in a cave! We were guided through the process of making a strudel and nockerl with precision through an enjoyable and engaging format. Really impressed and the overall experience was one I’d recommend to everyone, whether you’re an expert or a newbie!
It was exceptional, I suggest you experience it yourself, it was worth every penny.
