Full description

Discover Wai-O-Tapu, an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Center, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone with this entry ticket. Let the eruption of the Lady Knox Geyser take your breath away. 


Experience the Wai-O-Tapu park which means “sacred waters” in Maori, and which is the homeland of the Ngati Whaoa tribe who descended from those on the Arawa waka.


Admire the colorful hot springs, such as the Champagne Pool, Artist’s Palette, Primrose Terrace and the boiling mud pools. The striking appearance of these springs is due to dramatic geothermal conditions beneath the earth. Get access to this 18 square kilometer geothermal area.


Arrive in the morning and the see the 10:30 AM eruptIon of the Lady Knox Geyser. Marvel as hot water is shot sky-high from deep within the earth.

  • Please note that the opening hours at Wai-o-Tapu are 8:30am - 4:30pm with the last entry into the park at 3pm
  • The park’s visitor facilities include restrooms, lockers, a visitor center, a small café, and picnic areas
  •  This is an active geothermal area, meaning the ground and water often reach boiling temperatures. Don’t be tempted to break the rules or wander outside of designated areas
  • Of the three walking trails at Wai-O-Tapu, only one is accessible for wheelchair users and strollers

I enjoyed the park- I started with the mud pools on the way(they were amazing).I didn’t have a lot of time but made sure to do the first part of the walk from the entrance building which took me about 15 minutes and then drove up to Lady Knox geyser. The weather was appalling due to a cyclone but it didn’t dull the experience! I was a little disappointed to find out how they ‘manipulate’ the geyser eruption but it still led to an awesome show
