Full description

Depart Rome and transfer to Tivoli to tour 2 of Italy’s most impressive villas on this full-day tour of the Villa D'Este and Hadrian's Villa, with time to explore both magnificent country estates. Drive to Hadrian's Villa, built in the 2nd century by Emperor Hadrian, and once greater than the center of Imperial Rome. The largest and most luxurious residence ever built in Italy, it features an impressive array of imperial palaces, temples, theaters, thermal baths, and pools. After lunch, explore the grounds of the Villa D'Este and learn about the history and development of the villa, an enchanting site of the late Italian Renaissance. Once the home of Lucrezia Borgia's son, it is renowned for its spectacular gardens and trees, as well as its waterfalls and fountains. Highlights include the caryatids and columns of the Canopus and Serapeum, the pool and artificial grotto, named after an Egyptian city and temple dedicated to the god Serapis, and the Maritime Theatre, where a small Roman house was thought to have provided a retreat from the demands of court life.

Great day! Small group tour with enthusiastic guide who was very knowledgeable and expert. Hadrian's Villa is an amazing place, brought to life by our guide. Tivoli is amazing. Second time on this trip, enjoyed it as much this time round and learned more about each of these sites and their connections.

Respected the punctuality of the timetables, guide (Paola) native of Tivoli able to give many details on the place, a little confusion perhaps in keeping the group together with attention given the large areas of Hadrian's Villa, spread over a huge land rich in olive trees, but the overall visit is valuable, with a useful stop at the scale model of the various buildings that allow a very useful initial glance. However, in my opinion, the place deserves a whole day to walk in it at a slow pace to savor it properly. The bus then took us to the real town for the lunch break, and then we enter Villa d'Este, where perhaps more than the palace itself, it is the views and glimpses from above that act as a mistress, together with all the coolness generated by the water games with very creative jets, and in particular the imposing Baroque facade of the elaborate organ operated by the force of the water offers very well the idea of the taste of the time to amaze with splendor

Both Hadrian's Village and Ville D'Este are exceptional properties and are a must see. The beauty of Villa D'Este's many fountains and waterfalls cannot be overstated. Our guide, Joseph, was very knowledgable about both Hadrian's Villa and Villa D'Este but also threw in some fun knowledge. We really enjoyed the trip, although the bus had poor air conditioning.
