What to Expect
Uncover the secrets behind 2 of Rome's most important landmarks on a comprehensive history tour of the celebrated Spanish Steps and ruins beneath the Trevi Fountain.

Rising up towards the Church of Trinità dei Monti are 135 steps joining the magnificent place of worship to the Piazza di Spagna, where the old Bourbon Spanish Embassy was located. Designed by the architects Francesco de Sanctis and Alessandro Specchi, the emblematic Spanish Steps were financed by the Bourbon French diplomat Étienne Gueffier almost 300 years ago.

You'll enjoy a leisurely and educational climb to the church, taking in the panorama over the Piazza, where Pietro and Gian Lorenzo Bernini's 17th-century Fontana della Barcaccia (“Fountain of the Ugly Boat”) provides the curious centerpiece. From there you'll proceed to the Acqua Vergine, which follows the route of the Aqua Virgo – one of the aqueducts that supplied water to Ancient Rome from a pure water source 13 km from the city.

Not only will you see the famous Trevi fountain nearby but venture beneath to the huge complex of ancient underground ruins. The entrance lies at Vicus Caprarius, where this extraordinary archaeological find preserves evidence of the life and appearance of Rome in the 1st to the 4th centuries AD. A must-see for all visitors and history buffs, the site is an exceptional testimony to one of Imperial Rome's most significant periods.
