Full description
Explore St. Peter's Basilica, one of Rome's most famed and magnificent sites, and discover why the American philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson described it "an ornament of the earth...the sublime of the beautiful". Known as the Queen of all the Basilicas, the Basilica of St. Peter is a church in the Renaissance style with a central dome that dominates the skyline of Rome. As you enter the church, you will see that its interior is vast compared to other churches. At the heart of the basilica, beneath the high altar, you will discover the Confessio, or Chapel of the Confession, named for the confession of faith by St. Peter, which lead to his martyrdom. Two curving marble staircases lead to this underground chapel at the level of the Constantinian church and immediately above the burial place of Saint Peter. You will see that the entire interior of St. Peter's is lavishly decorated with marble, reliefs, architectural sculpture, and gilding. It's luxurious and elegant. Come and enjoy the Queen of all of the Basilicas!

The Reserved Entrance including an hour's guided tour around St Peter's Basilica seemed to be better value than a basic 'skip the line' (only 7euros more). There were about 10 people in our group at 10.30 am. You really need to meet at 10.15 (or before your allocated entrance time). Although clear instructions as to where to meet are given on the voucher/ticket, because of the enormity of the place, it's easy to start doubting that you are in exactly the right spot. Stay underneath/ in between pillars/columns until you see the Vox Mundi guides (one who checks tickets plus the tour guide). Only a few minutes later we were lead by our tour guide into the Basilica.

The structure is so big it is hard to take it all in. Our guide explained it all, but by bit. By the time we finished, we had a better grasp of the history and historical figures. Our guide also pointed out how to attend the papal ceremony each Wednesday, where the crypts started, and how to take the dome tour. We had a good time and would recommend this tour.

We had booked in the wrong language, but all languages meet at the same time and same place so you can get switched out easy enough. Don't go on Sundays like we did. There was a mass going on, which blocked off the entrance to the crypts while we were there. Besides, the museums aren't open on Sundays anyway.
