Full description

Meet your guide near the beautiful Tiber River, then travel back in time as you explore the picturesque streets of Trastevere. Head to the medieval Basilica of Saint Crisogono, which boasts an impressive interior. Next, go underground and find yourself in 4th-century Rome.

Soak up the unique atmosphere of this underground basilica, admiring its ancient frescoes and mysterious crypts. Head to the Church of Santa Cecilia next, and find its 3rd-century mosaic flooring underground. Learn about the legendary Santa Cecilia, as well as her macabre death.

Arrive at the Cavallini Room next, and marvel at the Last Judgement masterpiece (morning tours only). End the tour in the heart of Trastevere, in front of the golden mosaics of Santa Maria, one of the oldest churches in Rome.

PLEASE NOTE: The underground area of the Basilica di San Crisogono is open Monday to Friday only from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM (they are open all day on Saturday and Sunday). As a result, the undergrounds cannot be visited during the morning tours from Monday to Friday. However, the duration of the tour will remain unchanged, as your guide will point out other monuments instead.

As a result, the undergrounds cannot be visited during the morning tours from Monday to Friday. However, the duration of the tour will remain unchanged, as your guide will point out other monuments instead
  • Please be advised that customers with claustrophobia may not feel comfortable in the underground sections
  • The Cavallini Room is only accessible in the morning. So please note that the afternoon tours will not visit
  • Modest clothing is required to enter the churches (knees and shoulders must be covered)
  • The small group tours will have a maximum of 10 participants
  • This tour is subject to the liturgical-calendar. If canceled, you will be given the option of an alternative date or a full refund

Our guide was a highly intelligent, well educated lady who shared an incredible amount of history about the first 200 years in the early Christian church. She was well spoken, witty, and truthful about how some of it is educated guesswork. We learned about the art, the culture, the architecture, and so much more in the few hours that we were with her. We were in Italy for 10 days and she was by far the best tour guide of them all. She went well above and beyond to give us a thorough and truly wonderful tour that was the highlight of our trip. We felt bad because we did not have enough euros on hand to give her a very large tip, which she definitely had earned. Please plan ahead and make sure you tip her well (although tipping is not required).
