  • Explore the labyrinth of narrow galleries
Full description

First, listen to the history of the catacombs: from their origin to decline, and their rediscovery in the modern era. Learn how they were dug and administrated.

Enter the crypt of the 3rd-century Popes, where 5 of the 9 tombstones of Rome's bishops who were buried here are still preserved. Then admire a slab of marble where some famous verses of Pope Damasus were engraved.

Next, cross a narrow arch and enter the crypt where St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, was first buried. Be inspired by her history while contemplating the crypt's decorative frescoes and a copy of the statue made by Maderno, depicting the martyr's body when a reconnaissance was made in 1599.

From the crypt of Santa Cecilia, continue your tour through the oldest part of the catacomb. Admire its majestic galleries and the beautiful cubicles of "sacraments".

Finally, walk through the maze of tunnels dug in peacetime, trying to find your way out. Along the way, see various archaeological finds of funeral furniture before coming up to see the sunlight again.

It was like it was 5 stars! Guide in Portuguese does not exist. No one promised either. The visit is organized every 40 minutes. The group is sub-divided into 5 groups according to the preferred language: German, French, English, Italian and Spanish. Each sub-group takes a guide that explains what we are going to see. Down there you can count on 15º of summer or winter. good visit

A little tour worth the visit. Reaching the Catacomb via the public transport was a bit difficult and it took around 60minutes as no direct train and we took the bus option. The catacombs were a different experience going underground to visit the places of burial including 16 popes and 500,000 people and the history behind the catacombs all worth the visit for the trouble. There was no real skulls or skeleton to see as all were removed. Out tour guide was really good.

Father Primus was really a sensation. We were a small group of eight people and booked the tour in German. Father Primus always gave us very informative background information and also showed us rooms that larger groups cannot enter. Really only to recommend. A nice side effect was the fact that you can escape the heat on the surface in the catacombs, at least for a short time. All in all a very entertaining excursion and unconditional recommendation. Thanks very much!
