Book this trip - so worth it getting there early with a fantastic guide! Afterwards we did the Dome on our own (something we wondered about as this trip didn't list that) - super simple. We were probably the 2nd in line for the day, resulting in seeing many Vatican areas with almost noone else. We had a great balance of commentary and free time too.

You’re up early so grab a coffee & something to eat as there is a lot of walking to be done on this tour. Totally amazing and so much so see but the tour is well worth it to see all the important works of art and to get into the Chapel when it’s not too crammed. The Vatican cafe was really well priced so we grabbed some lunch there when the tour was over before we went across to St Paul’s Basilica.

This tour is not cheap but it is worth the price - and the early hour - in terms of the avoidance of the queues (especially in the heat of high summer) and the guide. The multiple changes of audio aid were deftly handled. ( I would advise taking your own headphones - those provided are encased in plastic packaging and not that good. )
