What to Expect
Take a 3-hour seminar tour of the Colosseum and ancient Rome led by a classical scholar. Learn about the imperial period from the time of Julius Ceasar to its fall, and get a unique glimpse of Roman culture at the time.

Begin your exploration at the Colosseum, ancient Rome's most visual legacy. Be introduced to key themes such as the role of entertainment in society, and the way power was projected. After visiting the amphitheater, continue down the Via dei Fori Imperiali and look down over the ruins, squares, and temples which collectively form a fora. This is a great opportunity to discuss the great expansion and how the old Republican city was transformed.

During the second part of the walk, visit markets and the monumental column of Trajan to learn about this emperor's development of the city. Linger among the ruins and examine the fantastic details of the Basilica Ulpia, taking the opportunity to enter it if it is open (the site only opens on special occasions). Learn about the relationship between some of the surrounding Medieval structures and Imperial buildings as you discuss the history of the area and topics that arise throughout the tour.

Then continue on to the Roman houses at the bottom of Capitoline Hill (Aracoeli), the only remains of Roman apartments visible above ground, followed by the theater of Marcellus if time allows. End the walk at Porticus of Octavia, originally used for leisure walks and art exhibits, and uncover more of ancient Roman daily life.
