What to Expect
Rome is a city of many fountains, from the old to the Baroque, to the worn to the hidden. Discover some of the most famous of the “Eternal City’s” exquisite water features with a local guide.

Start at the most famous fountain in the world – the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain). Loved by artists and cinematographers alike, it’s also the site of a city legend. Built between 1732 and 1762, the grandiose monument was designed by Nicola Salvi and takes its water supply from the Acqua Vergine aqueduct, constructed by Agrippa in 19 AD. Marvel at the marble statue of Oceanus on a shell being pulled by 2 horses. Then, throw a coin into the pool to make sure you one day return to Rome.

Next, go to the Fontana dei 4 Fiumi (Fountain of 4 Rivers) in Piazza Navona. Designed by Bernini for Pope Innocent X, the stunning landmark of Rome features an obelisk from the Circus of Maxentius, around which the legendary rivalry between Bernini and Borromini develops. Made up of rocks on which 4 river gods sit (each personifying a different river – the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata), the beautiful monument has its own legend.

The gestures of the statues are said to represent the mockery Bernini felt for his rival Borromini. The statue representing the Rio de la Plata has his hand raised as if protecting himself from the collapse of the façade of the Church of Sant’Agnese, constructed by Borromini. The Nile covers his face to avoid seeing the horrors of this building.

Continue to the Fontana delle Tartarughe (Turtle Fountain) in Piazza Mattei, and discover a treasure chest and precious jewel of the “Eternal City” with 4 conch shells surrounding the base, upon which you will see 4 celestial ephebes, each with a raised hand that pushes a turtle towards the vasque to drink.

See the Fountain of the Pantheon in one of the most beautiful squares in the world; Piazza della Rotonda. Designed by Giacomo della Porta, the original design was made up of a marble basin with a vertical stream and 4 masks on the sides. An Egyptian obelisk with inscriptions of Ramses II was later added, when the piazza was used for a street market.

The last stop on your tour is Piazza di Spagna with its famous “Barcaccia.” The Fountain of the Sunken Boat dates back to 1598, when the Tiber River flooded, submerging a good part of the city. When the water drew back, a barge was left stranded in the middle of the square, and was used as a model by Pietro and Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Hear about the many curiosities and historical facts hidden behind the beautiful fountain.
