We collected our tickets from the greeting guide who was standing in shade outside and in front of the building itself and booking in advance paid of as people who turned up on the day to buy tickets were told there were no tickets left. The tickets did not include a guided tour but if you rent the audio guide you do get lots of useful information. The building is full of classical statuary and paintings by famous painters and the rich interior decoration in marble with painted walls is breathtaking. But you need 2 hours to go through the many rooms. And we made good use of spacious cafe in basement of the building - good tea and coffee and cakes! The walk back down through the park to main area of Rome was lovely and part of the visit. There are shady walks but take water and sun hats anyway. You have to leave rucksacks at cloakroom and Inside the galleries it is very cool - so I wished I’d taken a scarf for my shoulders but the coolness is very refreshing in the August heat.
