Full description
Traveling by bus and on foot, this 3-hour guided tour takes you beyond the city walls of Rome, through the ancient tunnels of the city’s catacombs. You will travel along the rustic Appian Way, and under the arches of the aqueducts of antiquity. Constructed nearly 2,000 years ago as the burial chambers for early Christians, the catacombs reveal burial niches, mosaics, and sarcophagi, as well as ancient religious drawings While in San Callisto, explore the Crypt of the Popes, and view some of the very earliest Christian art. As Christianity became more popular in Rome, it became necessary to find a system for the burial of large of numbers of people, the majority of whom lacked money to pay for elaborate tombs and mausoleums. The solution was found in the friable tufa rock around the city. From the 2nd through to the 5th-Centuries, 60 catacomb complexes were dug, each occupying several layers, and 2 of which were designated for Jews. Out of the total number of catacombs, 5 of the Christian complexes regularly open to the public, giving you a unique perspective on Ancient Rome, in an environment that you will never see in the city center.

We had a great time on this small group tour. Our guide Giuseppe was so knowledgeable and passionate! We learnt so much not just about the Catacombs but also enjoyed walking some of the Via Appia and seeing the Aqueducts. It was a really hot day and the airconditioned minibus (and cool catacombs!) were a welcome treat. It was also great that we could fill up out waterbottles at the standard Roman nasoni fountains although there is a small shop at the Catcombs entrance.

Well organised, small vans, friendly, informed and good humoured guide. As I can't walk for long distances, the travel between each venue enabled me to sit and gather energy! The guide had clearly studied his information but I was a little surprised that he did not mention that the apostle Paul was welcomed to Rome near that section of the Appian Way, by believers from Rome who came out to meet him (Acts 28:15).

A wonderful half day on the outskirts of Rome.

My second trip booked with get your guide and yet again it did not disappoint. Our guide 'Lara croft archaeologist and historian' was a mind of fascinating information and incredible knowledge. The whole trip was so well organised from the meeting point to when they dropped us off. The catacombs were definitely worth a visit and then the little trip up the appian way was lovely but the highlight for me was the trip down to the aqueducts. The amazing coach driver literally squeezing the coach under the bridges and then a short walk out in beautiful surroundings to admire the architecture of the actual aqueducts was an unforgettable experience. A small group tour again! I can not recommend doing your tours through this company enough they are simply the best.
