Discover ancient Tuscan hill towns, admire views of rolling hills and vineyards, visit Sant’Antimo Abbey, stop at a typical Tuscan farm for lunch, and still have plenty of time left over to sample local wines and cheeses.
What to Expect
Head away from the bustle of Rome on a 1-day Tuscan vacation. Visit the famous Val D’Orcia region, and see the historic hill towns of Montepulciano and Pienza and the vineyards of Montalcino.
Travel from Rome by comfortable air-conditioned bus, arriving in the ancient Etruscan town of Montepulciano by mid-morning. See the town’s most important sights, from the exposed-brick Duomo to Punch’s Tower.
You’ll also see ancient Etruscan wells and venture deep into medieval wine cellars, still in use today, before moving on to the vineyards of Montalcino.
You will then arrive at Sant’Antimo Abbey, where the stone walls often ring with the sound of Gregorian chants. Lose yourself in the mystical ambiance and take the time to enjoy the views over some of Tuscany’s most beautiful vineyards.
This is where one of Italy’s finest wines, Brunello di Montalcino, is produced, and you’ll have a chance to enjoy some of this wine on the next leg of the journey.
Continue on to a typical Tuscan farm for a meal featuring the finest local produce. You’ll be served 3 courses of regional dishes, accompanied by local wines.
A professionally guided tasting of the wines produced on site follows lunch, and then it will be time to board the bus for Pienza. Hear how this World Heritage Site was conceived by Pope Pius II as a utopian village. See the 2 Renaissance palaces and the beautiful Duomo.
Take some time to explore the winding streets of Pienza on your own, marvel at the ancient architecture, and take in views of the rolling countryside.
Be sure to sample Pienza’s most important product, the salty Pecorino cheese!
